2008 was a fantastic year for gamers, and we will be looking forward to seeing what is in store for 2009, with the release of Resident Evil 5, Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Empire: Total War, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Ghostbusters, BioShock 2 and Overlord II among our personal favourites.

Zavvi cuts Xbox 360 price to £99

Zavvi has reduced the price of the Xbox 360 Arcade SKU to £99.99, making it the lowest price point for the console since the system was launched.

The Premium 360 pack has also been reduced in price to £149.99, while the Elite gets cut to £199.99. These cuts are expected to last until Christmas Day.

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that its highly anticipated PlayStation Home beta service for the PlayStation 3 will be available to all PS3 users around the globe on December 11th, 2008.

PlayStation Home is a 3D social gaming community available on PS3 that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences. By leveraging the power of PS3, PlayStation Home delivers overwhelming visual graphics and rich gaming social experiences. Within PlayStation Home, users can create and customize their own unique avatars and explore the virtual community in real time where they can communicate freely through text or voice chat.

PlayStation Division is Under Review

Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed this morning that the PlayStation division is currently under review, as the company is reviewing all sections of the business as it has been affected by the current economic downturn.

"In order to stay competitive in the accelerating global network environment, we will always carefully review and make structural changes, if necessary, in order to further expand and strengthen the PlayStation business around the world," said Sony in a statement issued to Gameindustry.biz.

8000 jobs were cut this morning, with an announcement that the company would be reducing investment in manufacturing. The company also has plans to downsize or withdraw from "unprofitable or non-core businesses."

Michael Denny: Heavy Rain Should Appeal to the Casual Market Two

In an Interview with GameIndustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe development boss Michael Denny's told the site that Heavy Rain isn't about being "good" at games, it's about the choices that players make, suggesting that the title will appeal to the casual market also.

"When you look at the game it is difficult to pigeon hole, and sometimes we talk about looking for new audiences. But sometimes it's about creating a product that can may be cross over to a number of different audiences,"
said Denny.

PlayStation 3 Version of Tomb Raider: Underworld takes 51 Per Cent of Sales

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the PlayStation 3 version of Tomb Raider: Underworld is the strongest selling version, with 51 per cent of all sales having been made on the PlayStation 3.

The Xbox 360 was able to take 34 per cent of the sales, whilst the other percentage was made up from the PC, Wii and DS.
