Review

We play Guilty Gear Dust Strikers...

Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is here offering a dual screen handheld instalment of the classic fighting series. This venture offers the same action with a Smash Brothers style twist with two screens of platforms to spread the fighting across, 4 way battles, and lots of extras.

Axl starts a combo
Milla is in a rage

Dust Strikers offers a roster of 21 fighters to clang metal and bang heads together with. Anji Mito, Axl Low, Baiken, I-No, Ky Kiske, Sol Badguy, Venom, Milla Rage, Chipp Zanuff, Dizzy, Faust, Jam, Potemkin, Johnny, May, Eddie, Testament, Slayer, Bridget, Zappa and Robo Ky are available to trade blows with.

Mini Games offers character related fun in the form of 7 different activities to choose from, these are:

May’s Dolphin Show – a game that involves arranging the jumping rings at a dolphin show.
Note Capture – Capturing the notes from I-No’s hat.
Yo-yo Polish – What the name says, you have to clean a yo-yo
Balance Game – balance thing that fall from the top screen on the bottom screen.
Venom’s Billiards – Play billiards against Venom.
Hit Down – A whack the mole type game involving Faust.
Sword Master – The DS pen can be as mighty as the sword as you use it to swipe at failing hay bails on the touch screen.

Taking the fight to the platforms
Faust has the crown

The Mini Games are all played with the DS stylus. The DS stylus minimally used during regular play for selecting collected power, energy, attack icons that appear on the bottom right of the touch screen.

The Robo Ky Factory offers the player an option customise their own robotic version of protagonist Ky Kiske. Through progressing scores in the Mini Games new moves will be unlocked that you can use in the factory. When your Robo Ky is complete you can let him loose and use him in the game.

Like with the popular Smash Brothers format the battles in Dust Strikers take place as a 4 way brawl. During the battles the on-screen character who has the upper hand of all 4 will be marked with a crown icon above their head, this is because the fights are also about keeping the most energy left before the timer runs out more than knocking an opponent out. With the 4 Way Brawl format a 4 player option also available to compliment it via DS wireless play.

With Arcade and Story Mode the simple aim is to defeat anyone who comes your way until you come across the final showdown against the games final boss Gig. Gig is best described as a large insect creature with an angel like entity sticking out of his/her bottom end as if bosses couldn’t get more bizarre. With Arcade mode the game revolves around the challenge aspect, whereas Story Mode centres on the individual storyline around the character you play as. Dust Strikers offers exclusive, different and previously unseen character development with the fighters that hasn’t been witnessed in other conversions.

The other outstanding feature of Guilty Gear: DS is the rocking soundtrack. Each level and various parts of the game feature a rock tune to accompany the action. The music of Guilty Gear has always been a popular aspect of the series and rocking tunes have certainly been added to the DS game.

Sol Badguy in trouble
Potemkin’s Incredible Hulk impression

Since there isn’t a large range of one on one versus fighters available for the DS it is easy to say that Guilty Gear currently rules the roost. The reputation of the Guilty Gear series speaks for itself making a conversion of the game very welcome to the DS games library. Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers is a must for beat-em-up fans and to anyone who enjoyed playing the previous games on other platforms, since the action can now be taken with you.

Top Game Moment:
The game intro showing off the characters and as always in Guilty Gear Ky Kiske performing the “Ride The Lightning” super special attack.
