10 Things We Want From Football Manager 2013

With 2012’s football season coming to a dramatic close, it's a good opportunity to reflect on simulation-behemoth Football Manager 12 and what the next version might hold (aside from another new Chelsea manager). Every year sees fans' favourite Sports Interactive attack its previous version with the aim of making the latest version the best yet. Much more than a yearly rehash, SI Games commits itself to its community. It listens – an activity that’s rare in this industry.

So aside from minor tweaks and another attempt to get the game’s training system right, what major changes would we love to see in Football Manager 2013?

Media – In-roads have definitely been made with media interaction, but so much more can be done. At the moment you still find yourself grinding through repetitive questions. As is customary with every new Football Manager, most players give media interaction a chance before turning to their Assistant Manager for support. To improve, the easy answer is greater variation – but cycling the questions doesn’t necessarily mean improvement. It’s all about dynamism – i.e. getting the press to actually mirror what's going on in the club. We’re not going to lie; this does drift into semantics, but it would be great to see media spruced up over time.

Player Lives - Football Manager has always recreated the beautiful game to astonishing detail, but nowadays the sport is more than kicking a ball around a pitch. Players' lives are under constant scrutiny, and a week doesn't go by without news of an affair, rape, assault, or hair transplant. Capturing this metanarrative would be difficult, but imagine form being more than performance / training related. Your star striker who was out binging the night before finds himself sluggish for the next match and refuses to come off the bench to play. It would certainly provide a break from that repetitive inbox of ‘Joe Bloggs is unhappy and absent from training due to a lack of first-team play’.

Goalkeeper AI - Yes, the quality on show in the lower leagues is a different beast to the slick passes of the Premiership, but those languishing in Blue Square Premier aren't that bad. Some of the handling we see in matches is pathetic and deeply frustrating. While we understand the need to stagger skills as well as the difficulty in accurately assigning 3D visuals to statistics, our grandparents could do a better job in goal. It's regularly a comedy of errors, and not the amusing kind.

Financial Control - OK, so a club's economic growth isn't the realm of a manager, so why assign confidence to a manger in this area? Even when you're successfully sticking to the tightest of wage budgets, you're still penalised by your club's inability to demonstrate financial stability. The limited controls, even with board requests thrown in, need to be relaxed to give you some breathing room.

Better Multiplayer – Football Manager Live semi failed, so we understand the difficulty of creating a functional multiplayer version of a slow-paced game. People’s play styles, available time and location all factor into a multiplayer game of Football Manager, so at least the technical side should work smoothly. Football Manager, when played as a network game, is notoriously slow (and that’s not counting the glacial decision-making speed of competitors). Just loading a player sheet can take several seconds (though the new attributes shortcut helps), and when you’re playing a game which revolves around information, this lack of pace is unacceptable. One day we’ll log-in and somehow play with others with flawless performance, but we can’t help but feel it’s a desire still years away.

Transfer Interest - Football is a game of people making split-second decisions. Football Manager has come to reflect this fact with the introduction of real-time contracts and player-agents, but transfer interest still boils down to a few choice players on the pitch – no-one ever wants your reserves – not even pathetic teams propping up the table. Furthermore, it's depressing when your computerised opponents have the breath of a database. They cherry pick the best because they can - you're limited to your human capabilities and back room staff. Where do all these players your opposing managers find come from? Wishing to raid the fridge, only to find it empty is an accurate comparison.

Benchwarmers – Please, let us assign the Secondary Keeper status to a new signing - having someone join your team, only to moan they haven't played a game is irritating. Most clubs have a reserve keeper who rarely plays (heaven forbid if you’re the third-choice keeper), and he knows just what his role is. It's unfair to keep cycling keepers just to keep people happy – it’s something that never happens in football.

Shot accuracy - 40 yard screamers from your opponent? 1 foot sitters spooned over the bar by your leading men? Sound about right? It could just be our tactics, or the unfair limits of computer control, but sort it out Sports Interactive.

Multi-desktop Support – With Football Manager 12’s overhauled UI, there was a genuine step in the direction of Football Manager OS. Imagine a world where you don’t turn on a computer, but rather your computer is Football Manager. You can load the internet and play other games, but FM 13 (arguably we’re thinking much further into the future with this one) would be your operating system – widgets could be dragged around; Outlook is your actual inbox – push notifications about your transfer targets are sent to your phone. It’d be magical.

Mobile Support – Which leads us nicely onto our concluding thought – FM Handheld / iOS / Android already exists, but they’re standalone experiences with no consistency. Imagine being able to iCloud-sync your save game (or Dropbox) before moving onto the train to continue your managerial dominance. Even if the practicality of file-transfers are out, why not create a native app for scouting, tactical tweaking and correspondence? How about a real-time Football Manager – a further blend between FM Live and Football Manager the game. Football Manager Life.

Get cracking Sports Interactive – you can have these suggestions on us.

Oooh, love the last idea. Handheld is very simplified - as expected - but really enjoyable. It would be great is one could use the same save game to progress.

I'd also like to have real faces for the multiple blank ones that have always been in place for the majority of players, instead of having to turn to the modding community to download packs (which can actually cost you real cash, before most are taken down and made unavailable).

"Player Lives" would be a bonus, as it is with "FIFA Manager 12" to a certain degree, but might not be popular with the hardcore base. Attending media events has already been listed as an unwanted feature for the hardcore in "FM 2012" so if it was an option this might go down a lot better. I'd certainly go for it, but without player portraits and official sponsorship deals that EA own the rights to exhibiting in-game I'm not sure how authentic it could be.
I have the Android App and while it is cool, it is far from what it could be. So I like this addition you have listed here.
I have played "FM 2011" for many hours, and "FIFA Manager 12" for less though have passed on "FM 2012" as the upgrade from the year I own is not enough to justify the price. I look forward to getting "FM 2013" though.

The 3D engine also needs a thorough overhaul, as "FM 2012" is not that functionally different to the previous year, and in some cases is worse.

Create an SI Petition Marco, and I'll be the first to sign:)
Thanks for this list, btw.

I have a few suggestions.
1. When you are interested in a player and they want first team football/move to a bigger club etc and publicly cry out for you to come get them often the transfer fee is very high. This is fine but then if you wait a year until the price drops which is quite a common thing the player seems to have forgotten his dreams of playing for your club and isn't really bothered about coming anymore. This particularly annoyed me seeing players wanting to join my club only for a price to be 25m for a 3m player then they go and sign a new contract with their club which screws me.

2. Like it says above about the finishing. Sometimes my top quality players show real talent and dribble past 3 players slamming it into the top corner but seriously the amount of times my star striker who has 18 finishing and 18 composure finds himself with an open goal and the screen flashes HOW DID HE MISS THAT!! its crazy the amount of times every game this happens. Top finishers in those positions rarely miss, if ever and this should be reflected. I've even looked into getting better strikers because they simply dont put away sitters but ive looked and the only people with better finishing are Messi and Ronaldo so this is really unrealistic.
3. I also agree with the secondary keeper issue but the way I've managed to get around it is by having a very young keeper with excellent potential and playing him in the league cup and at home against lower table opposition. That usually keeps him quiet.

4. There should definitely be more options with the media. I do every press conference as my assistant has a habit of saying stupid stuff that pisses off my players but more options would be great.

5. Having the game recognise the difficulty of certain games better. As Man Utd I am expected to comfortably win away at liverpool, chelsea and arsenal and that is just crazy talk. Also when I had Rooney, Hazard, De Gea, Vidic, Valencia and Welbeck injured there seemed to be no let up in the games' expectations of a dominant win at liverpool so when I got thumped 4-2 with a 2nd string team there was uproar and no apparent consideration for a severely injured team. This gets very annoying as those games are hard no matter what.

5. All the players who just aren't quite good enough to make it past my reserves, no-one ever wants them and it would be better if teams actually tried to sign them once in a while.

6. When I have a star player on my team and another team wants them they never seem to want to pay the top money I would need to buy someone from another team. I wanted Varane and paid 70M for him but Barcelona want Vidic for 10M? Those offers are laughable but if they offered me 30M I would consider it

7. One thing I would like tweaked slightly aswell is players getting pissed off they are not in the team. Everyone has a role to play and some people are rotation players but complain at not being played enough so this could be tweaked slighty I think. Also whatever visions the fans have of certain players is a bit crazy. I sold Michael Carrick for 2M when he was 33 and the fans were pissed as they thought he was a key player (hadn't played him for a year) and felt he had a lot to offer. I don't know but these things just seem a little off at times. You should have seen the rage from fans when I sold Park Ji-Sung, you would have thought I'd shot their mother!

Anyways I think thats all the little things I would change. I absolutlely love the game just to be clear, I'm in my 5th season with Man Utd and almost have my perfect squad, almost!!

Agreed, Matthew and all valid points (No. 7 in particular). I'd like also like more warning if a player is thinking of walking. Two more additions I'd like to see:

1. Giving your player a real drubbing after a poor performance with more player response options and dynamic results. The options on offer are just too slim.
2. The overall conversation tree needs looking at as too often the personal approach is removed particularly when in a Media Conference and you are adressing questions regarding other teams/coaches/players. If I want to make a match a grudge match, I want there to be no doubt that that's what it's going to be. Instead, all I get is that I either "fear" or am "initimadated".

The only thing i would add to that is the national teams when England are still picking lampard at 37 when you have a midfielder who has had an awesome season its like they never look at who's playing good if lampard or terry was sat in the reserves the national team still selects them its unrealistic.

Multi-player has to be the real need here. All the others mentioned (all valid) are game tweaks really.
While it was great fun having 3 mates round for a LAN party and 'linking up' for FM and all choosing our own teams, life has rudely interrupted us and spouses/kids make it difficult to get away from our respective homes now.
It would be mind blowing to come home from work and log-in to our saved game from the comfort of our own houses and give it some leather.
I know one of the issues always raised with multiplayer was that everyone would want to be Man Utd, Real Madrid etc etc, but surely that be can avoided by having the option for private rooms so you and a pre-set number of friends can log-in and play amongst yourselves, much like Rogue Spear in days gone by aaah.

by gunslinger51 on aug 08 2012 i would like to see keepers punished more giving away pens and handling outside the box.also not to be sacked in 6 months for siting 4th in table in your 1st season its not right give bosses a chance .

I would like to add just one thing:

. player interaction should be much better, especially with player's from other clubs, you could like interact a player with 1 year left of contract to not accept a new contract from his club as you'd like to transfer him at a free transfer when the contract is almost ending (you can only approach these players if they have 6 months or few of contract left).

And much more player interacting options, like some already stated here.

I hope FM 2013 becomes a sucessful upgrade to the fm series.
