Well it has been ages since I've been on, mostly due to events, christmas, birthday.etc. And also Skyrim.
This is gonna be long so if you've got a short attention span you might as well click the back button on your browser now.
So how did I find Skyrim? Prepare to be shocked but I was actually quite disappointed.
Skyrim for me was the game of the year, I saw that it would the most breathtaking fantasy yet. However I also saw things before it's release that I didn't agree with, but I just looked at the bright sides of the negatives and cheered myself up a bit. Too bad when it got round the playing the game those negatives swung at me in force.
Lets cover the positives first.
The graphics are simply breathtaking, I have yet to see a game to rival Skyrim's graphic capabilities. The rivers, the oceans, the waterfalls, the landscapes, simply marvellous. Combat was pretty decent too with the exception of one thing that I'll cover later and it's more realistic.
Gotta love the perk tree as well, and I like the fact you can craft your own equipment too.
Now the negatives of the game. Sadly, there's a fair amount of em.
First of all, the disposition, I dislike the way Bethesda have made it so you can't do that little mini-game in Oblivion to make people like you, or hate you as the case may be.
Another flaw is some of the conversations. In Oblivion, you can actually have proper convos with at least most of the NPCs in the game. Not in Skyrim. With a lot of the people, it's just say one line, and move on.
Other things such as what I call the "Live Action Shots" when killing an enemy also flaw the game. By Live Action Shot I mean the cam going into 3rd person and showing the player pull off a final move. This doesn't improve the game or make it look cool, it just interrupts gameplay and wastes time.
To conclude, this is the result of Oblivion (the best RPG ever made so far), with the worst things from Fallout 3, and some of the flaws of Fable 2 thrown into a mixing bowl and baked into a bitter cake called Skyrim. Although Oblivion can't keep up with Skyrim's immense graphics, Oblivion completely walks all over it in terms of gameplay.
Sorry readers, but it's a 6/10 from me. (This review might change as I play the game more, but for now I am disappointed)
On a brighter note I will start making mods again, but only once the Skyrim Creation Kit is out, I will no longer be making mods for Oblivion as Oblivion is old news now and besides, I might get drawn into Skyrim, or I might not, who knows?
There will also be another Q&A post coming up shortly, but more on that later. I'm sorry my return post was pretty dark and negative, but I had to get my this off my chest. I promise my next blog post will be more positive.
UPDATE: The above review may change to become positive but after seeing Bethesda's recent addition (See "No Skyrim Mods... Period") I can only see the rating going down.
