The Elder Scrolls V Won't Use Gamebryo

The Elder Scrolls IV: Obilivion
Bethesda has revealed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will have a new engine, eschewing the old Gamebryo engine that came under criticism for characters that delved into the uncanny valley.

This was revealed in a tweet by Bethesda Softworks community manager Nick Breckon:

We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic.

Since ZeniMax, Bethesda's parent company, acquired id Software, the rumor is that it'll use the id Tech 5 engine, which is powering DOOM 4 and Rage.

Well I just hope that my PC will be able to run TESV with some decent details at least.

If it can be as good as Morrowind there is a chance for it.

Another reason to upgrade early in the new year.

Wow, that is good news. Hopefully it will be such a nice change that the artists decide to change the overall appearance of Elder Scrolls. The faces so far have been butt-ugly and the customisation options aren't really that fun. In the end - you play the only "normal" looking person in freak land.

also, this will hopefully lead to an engine that isn't as shaky as the Gamebryo one with texture problems etc.

@FoolWolf Butt-ugly doesn't even begin to describe them :) But there is hope however. While the faces in TESIV and Fallout 3 & NV were pretty awful there is a nice mod for Fallout NV that adds pretty little faces for our enjoyment :)

@JC
Just remember to mod the hell out of it, Joe. Makes for a much better experience.

Actually I don't get the idea behind the bashing of Gamebryo. It's not that the engine was to be blamed for the bad looks of characters. Plenty of mods proved it... An upgrade is a good thing nevertheless.

Both Oblivion and Fallout3 need to be played with mods in order to have a true experience. The vanilla versions are too unbalanced but they are an excellent basis for modding :)

P.S. I'd recommend a total conversion mod named "Nehrim" to all Oblivion fans.

P.P.S. Of course, I can't wait for the new Elder Scrolls! :)

@V4ndall: From my personal point of view, it's not the fact that they've been using Gamebryo for the past few games or so, it's that somehow, each time they've used it, the game has been in serious need of some QA.

You'd think with New Vegas for example, I guess the last game to use the engine, they'd have all the kinks worked out.

I haven't tried New Vegas yet, but I believe that the third release (or were there even more?) using the same engine MUST be better comparing to previous releases.
