Windows 8 to push PC gaming?
Posted: 22.12.2010 23:03 by JonahFalcon Comments: 29
Eurogamer is reporting that Microsoft plans to use Windows 8 to re-invigorate PC gaming. The next OS is scheduled for sometime in 2012.

An insider told TechRadar that, “Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming. Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS.”

Microsoft has hired Rahul Sood, one of their biggest critics in the past, as ”general manager for system experience in the interactive entertainment business”. Sood is a fanatic PC gamer, and posted in his blog that he ”will be working on some really… really… really cool stuff come January 2011″.

What do you think is planned for January? Perhaps a new DirectX?

Sounds too good to be true. We shall see what to make of Win 8 when it's out.

Windows7 has shown a SIGNIFICANT amount of progress comparing to Vista. It has superior memory management, and so many good things that make it one of the best windows OS ever released. If they continue with this principle in Windows8, then it will be a miracle for gamers indeed.

Windows 8 this soon. Sounds more like an incremental development like Vista was, as opposed to a full-blown OS. Time will tell...

Pretty sure nothing can topple Steam now, too many people have bought too many games through that service now to stop using it. I have over 40 games on it, and my favourite thing about it is having all my games in one easy to access location. Using a second platform would partially defeat the purpose. So, unless they come up with something truly amazing.. the odds are that i'll remain with Steam for the long run.

They're talking about improving and promoting PC gaming as a whole.

Keep dreaming Microsoft. You can only achieve success if you buy Steam.

Nice thought, they might actually buy Steam.

@Herodotus. Windows 8 will be like vista, a piece of crap. One time the manager of the computer shop that I go to told me how Microsoft works, he said that windows 98 was what windows 95 should have been and so on. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been, you get the picture.

Er, this sounds like Win7 and the relaunch of GFWL....
If you stop buying own exclusives to Xbox - then I start believing you actually want to support gaming fully...

@Jonah: Sorry, my comment was more aimed at the Eurogamer article, I just didn't think about it when I posted. I was responding to this line:

'You'll have a mammoth task catching up with Valve's hugely successful Steam portal and winning gamers back to Microsoft's unloved Games for Windows set-up.'

I's good to see that Microsoft is trying to make this OS more gamer friendly like WinXP.
@unsilviu how about: Win-M8 or The Big 8

Won't replace Steam. Too many Publishers with no love for MS have entered into publishing agreements with Valve Corp.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
First sin of microsoft is making dx10 only vista. If they made it OS transparent I could be today using w7 with dx10/dx11 card. I am talking about small changes in my configuration. Today card, tomorrow RAM, next OS or something. And I could play all this time. I dont buy almost all new computer parts one day because microsoft told he will support pc gaming with new os. And where are Gears of War 2, Halo titles, Fable 2 or Limbo? Now microsoft dream about domination with WP7 and in future with new OS about pc domination. But I think it doesnt happend. I dont want WP7 hardware and I stick to xp until Steam works on it.

I just hope the "invigoration" doesn't involve something like integrating GFWL into the OS...

Let's hope so.

For my laptop, Win7 is really more power-capable than winXP. I was doubtful in the beginning, but now after one month, I must say that I booted in winXP only once!

I think Mac could win with PC this fight if become cheaper or be completed possibly from parts like PC. But Mac never be open architecture like PC so (badly) it never happend.

If Apple would sell their OS to the general market, instead of Macs only, Microsoft would have a real rival in terms of quality, OSX, is without a doubt the best OS on the market, but their hardware isn't so good, If they only thought of selling to a more general public I think that they could over throne Microsoft.

Apple has the best quality in software, but their hardware is seriously ovverrated and overpriced. For instance, I understand they still ship all their Macs with one-buttoned mice.

one button mice does that even exist anymore, overpriced is the word for all Apple products, yes they are good probably the best in the market, but damn their prices can cause a person an heart attack, Seriously lower the prices and I will become an Mac/Apple fan.

Can't wait for it. PC will always win. I hope its a cheap upgrade from windows 7 though. I am building a new system soon and paying for windows 7 so I would hate to have to spend a lot on a new OS when I just bought 7 not too long ago. Anyways sounds epic.

In the latest PC gamer Sweden they tried out the Mac's (not the powerhouses) but the Imacs, powerbooks and notebooks. Compaired with PC'sthat cost the same and doing teswts on both STEAM for Mac etc, the Mac's were still algging a bit behind in performance of gaming. Until Apple will support gaming and really push for hardware that is optimal for gaming - Apple will never claim the throne. However, it is good that they have started. It makes the "computer" a viable gaming platform. Linux dists needs to be understandable for "normal" people before that one even will be a chopice for desktops...
No, I think we are stuck with Windows for some considerable time unless either Apple and/or Linux does something, or the industry change alltogether.

Interesting foolwolf. The upgrades for macs are soooo expensive though. So it won't last long if it can play games. Until my new build comes in I am using a computer from 2007 with only a $100 (over priced at best buy compared to internet) graphics card. It runs DX11 at good frames but my cpu is bottlenecking my system. So altogether for another $200 (using amd, although my new build is intel)I can run every current game at max settings. Its a 430 gt. Preforms way more than I was expecting. Runs arma 2: OA at just about max.
