Super Meat Boy canceled for Wii

Super Meat Boy for the Nintendo Wii has been canceled, due to the 40MB restriction on WiiWare downloadable software.

Developer Team Meat tweeted, "ATTENTION: there will not be a Wiiware version of SMB. we are looking in to retail Wii, bit its also looking grim. still looking though."

Designer Edmund McMillen told Joystiq, "There is no way to avoid the fact that if we released a 40MB version of Super Meat Boy it would be a shit version of the game… It’s a lose lose situation, but the fact of the matter is if we release a shitty game, we will have to live with that for the rest of our careers and have to cop to the fact that it is a shitty game."

Xbox Live Arcade had its own 50MB cap at launch that was expanded to 100MB, then 250MB before having no cap at all, since Microsoft found few people were using memory cards, and as hard drives grew larger to accommodate downloadable video content and original Xbox titles. Since the Wii has no hard drive, it’s not an option.

I like Team Meat and SMB. And I am sure game could be fit in 40MB. Its called optimization. Every gamer with gaming history longer than 15 years tell that. Some1 had Amiga? This game is possibile on this hardware? I think yes. On 50 diskettes (1 amiga disk = 880KB)? I dont think so.

@JonahFalcon
Can you explain?

Sure, it's the same reason Lumines Live was released in several parts when there was a cap on XBLA. You simply cannot fit all of the assets of Super Meat Boy in 40MB. I don't know where you're getting the word "optimization" from, but I don't think it means what you think it means.

@JonahFalcon
Are you talking about DLC skin pack for Lumines?
You cant put 200MB in 40MB in simple "put". It is obvious. Thats why there optimization is needed.
