Thanks to some concept artwork and even a few rough design documents we now know Crystal Dynamics was planning a survival horror adventure.
Everything points to a very Tomb Raider-inspired journey, full of puzzles, acrobatics and bad guys. It was canned though and likely became the TR reboot.
The setting for this open-world game was America which seems to have been struck by multiple disasters like earthquakes and the like. Horrible looking creatures would have plagued the remnants of the land and were to be susceptible to light.
There's a detailing a puzzle or two like bouncing light of mirrors and even how our protagonist would be firing his dual pistols. They were thinking of having our guy automatically target the closest bad guy when we squeezed the trigger.
Crystal Dynamics has revealed Tomb Raider where 'A Survivor Is Born' so it would appear they took the foundation for this cancelled project and applied it to Croft, where she works to survive after being shipwrecked on an island - it's believed to be open-world. Tomb Raider releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Another set of concept works were posted by a former Crystal Dynamics developer although they haven't mentioned what project it was for - it's in tone and setting to the survival horror that, erm, never survived - see them below.
