Update: Ubisoft has confirmed that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover will release on March 25th 2011 for PCs in the UK. No console versions are planned.

The classic combat flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik returns, as it takes us to 1940 over the white cliffs of Dover in a critical moment in World War II. The game is being developed by sim legend Oleg Maddox of 1C and published by Ubisoft.

Cliffs of Dover takes place in 1940 during the pivotal aerial battle for the skies over Britain between the British, the German and the Italian air forces.

According to Ubisoft's presser, gamers can expect over a dozen of famous English, German and Italian aircraft, detailed with true-to-life modeling of aircraft systems based on thousands of hours of dedicated research, with every single aircraft component being damageable in combat. In addition, there are thirteen more AI-only aircraft.

The game will have both a single campaign in which the player joins the British RAF and a massively multiplayer combat free for all mode in which up to 128 players can have a massive dogfight in the air, which the dev states can last from hours to weeks (or even longer.) For newcomers, the game will also have an interactive training mode to get them in the air and combat ready quickly.

The game, of course, will feature state of the art graphics, with support for DX10 and DX11 API, with the game boasting a huge variety of photorealistic ground vehicles, buildings and other environmental elements recreate minute details of 1940s Europe.

Ubisoft has also announced a Collector's edition that will include a cloth pilot escape map showing The Battle of Britain strategic locations, a replica of the Pilot’s Notes on the Spitfire I Aeroplane, provided to RAF pilots during The Battle of Britain and reprinted from the RAF Museum original document, and in-depth 150-page ring binder pilot instructions.

@Neilmike
This is the followup to "IL2" and "Il2 Forgotten Battles", not the console game "IL2: Birds of Prey".
Well with a name change (gone is "Storm Of War") we simmers are impatiently awaiting the arrival of Oleg's much desired sequel (we don't count "Pacific Fighters").
Interest from the PC aviation sim community is at an all-time high, with only "Rise of Flight" as the true combat air sim most played atm. The system requirements are quite steep, but then they always are with flight sims.

Yeah gone is the name I reserved 2 domain names for (Storm Of War) but I'll buy it anyway. Nothing can come close to this sim. It wil ridicule everything in existence except RoF maybe.
