Jack Wall: Mansell replaced me as Mass Effect 3 composer

Jack Wall, composer of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, has settled the question of whether he’s involved with Mass Effect 3 in any way or not: he isn’t.

His Bioware forum post reads:

Dear People Who Love Mass Effect -

So…maybe it’s time to actually say something?

Working on the Mass Effect series was epic. It was mind-bending, soul-coughing, astral-plane traveling delicious loveliness – all the way. The games themselves are works of art. I wouldn’t change one note of it that myself, Sam, David, Richard or Jimmy wrote. As you may have noticed by now, I am not returning to score the final game. The reasons are much too complicated to explain here, but suffice to say that the people at BioWare and I are still friends and we all really still like each other a lot. More importantly, the score for ME3 will be great and even more important than that, the game will liikely be (being BioWare and all) super duper fantastic.

Clint Mansell is cool. Enjoy.

Oh and thanks to everyone for the kind words here and over the years. For those of you who didn’t say nice things, that’s cool too. I’m still searching for the perfect chord. If you guys see it laying around, let me know, ok?

See you in another game in another crazy universe!

-Jack

Not having played much of either "ME"'s I don't know Wall's work. But I do know of Mansell's work well. Mansell has developed quite a following amongst us soundtrack collectors over the years ("Requiem For A Dream" being the stand-out, with "The Wrestler" being more recent) so one could expect only good things from this. His scoring credits already include "Mass Effect 3" on many soundtrack sites, so I'd expect he has it well in hand.

He made some great stuff. One of the most professional composers in video games today. Wonder why BioWare would let him go? His music was perfect for Mass Effect.

I don't know of any work by Mansell which I'd consider on par with Jack Wall's work on Mass Effect, however that isn't to say he isn't good, because he is (Jack Wall is just awesome though). I find it very odd that Jack wont be composing ME3, or even sticking around to assist. Mansell has a lot of pressure on him now, hopefully he can deliver.
