Er, pirates are already aware of it. Everyone on Facebook is aware of it - Electronic Arts told them so. There's no link to the torrent that I can see. This is already widespread news.

Not everyone looks up what EA says mate.
And Crytek will not stop PC development, they're working their asses off to make the PC version better knowing that we expect it. They care for us unlike other devs. *cough* Activision *cough* I wouldn't even call the leaked build a "late" beta. It doesn't even have DX10 and 11 implemented yet.

Playdead just made fools out of themselves for saying that, piracy exists on ALL platforms.

yup its easy to pirate on xbox360 and ps3 but it has the same limitations on most but not all games wich is singelplayer only

besides form what ive been able to gather of info is that EA also done a poor job actually protecting it. it wouldn't be the first leak that gone out because of EAs stupidness

well i think you can bypass on most things lol...
recently learned of tunggle wich makes MP possible with games even when pirated on the pc

anyway im only pirateing old games wich you can't find on the market anymore somethimes do temp pirate one if i don't have the money on at the time or if im ensure if its good

Yeah I agree it was clearly an inside job. And ok pirating the game is bad... but at this point in time as it is still incomplete I imagine a big portion of the people who bother to download it simply want to get a sneak peak of the game so far and will buy it when it is released anyway.

Obviously they need a new security system.

I wouldn't be too worried about it though. Even if the pirates get their hands on it early, they weren't going to buy the game anyway. I greatly doubt it will have any significant effect on sales.

First of all JF it's not bullshit as you've so nicely put it. Crytek is responsible because the leak came from one of their own employees. Crytek should have done better to protect it's assets so it's their fault as is the fault of the one who stole and released the unfinished build of Crysis 2 on the net. Pirates just grabbed this opportunity to spread the copy as much as possible. Now JF,comparing this situation to a rape is a pathetic try to discredit my previous statements. You say "That's what demos are for". What demos? Majority of AAA PC titles no longer have demos and the ones that do are mostly MP demos which I personally don't like while consoles on the other hand get demos all the time. Reviews you say? I'll use your car analogy. I wouldn't buy a car simply because someone wrote on a website or in a newspaper that it's awesome or whatever. Before you buy a car you can take it for a test drive so you'll know if it's good for you. You're right that games are a luxury, but they are also an addiction. There is one very easy way to combat piracy and that is : LOWER PRICES.

Amen brother. That's what I've been saying, game prices have gone up, demos almost completely extinct and they expect us to cough up the cash for a game that we don't even know if it'll run well on our hardware. Cod BO for PC was a perfect example of a defective product. I'm not saying piracy is OK, far from it but if developers and publishers want to lower it's impact on a gaming industry and gamers alike then they should start rethinking their business strategy.

The fact of the matter is that the honor system was tested, and it failed miserably. If you think pirates are honorable people who just want to crack a game so they can play it and then later purchase it... well, there's a bridge here in New York I'd like to sell you.

Visit China sometime and see pirated games being sold for $2 a pop on the open market.

And suppose you don't like a game. Does that mean you're entitled not to pay the person who made it? That's the same lame "most movies are junk so it's okay to steal cable" argument.

Again, you can rationalize the hell out of this all you like, but the next time you whine about games not coming out on PC, this is why.

This is why PC owners can't play Limbo. Playdead said, "Too much piracy, we don't want to lose money to them." Same deal with EA Sports.

I didnt look up the differences to a full release but from what ive seen yet the leak is inferior in some points (e.g. DirectX). One could argue that this qualifies the leak as a kind of demo, even if it wasnt intended for this use.
After all, what is a demo? The game with some parts missing.
The purpose is to get people hooked on the game, then tell them: Theres an even better version with more stuff!

Besides, its an enourmous amouth of free publisity, e.g. i didnt even know crysis 2 was due. And as we all know: Publisity = good for sales

As for the "lost" sales (which no doubt was on your mind by now) theres 2 things:
- Multiplayer. Even though its not impossible there that there will be cracked servers without owning the game youll never be able to play online big time. Cracked stuff is always small and sparsely used, thus theres no community.
This makes you lose a huge chunk of the game -> go back to demo version.
Note that i dont know what proportion of Crysis 2 is made up by multiplayer, but its at least a part.

This is from 2009 and not about a game but they released the whole freaking stuff without any limitation.

Gyorn, I think you may have overlooked this part:

"The leak includes the full Campaign, Multiplayer and the Master-keys to activate the product for online use."

In other words, this is by no means 'good' free publicity, since players can basically experience the entire thing, without needing to purchase the game. It's far more than just a demo, it's essentially the complete game just excluding last minute polishing and bug fixing.

I doubt the masterkey is much of a problem. After all the game hasnt been released yet, thus the key can still be changed. Even if the DVDs are already shipped it can be patched (after all you have to update to play online) or another way would be to simply ban the masterkey from the game servers. Might be a bit of a hassle for the devs but should be doable.

As for other missing stuff: Somone mentioned missing DirectX 10 and 11 thus graphics are impaired, too. And graphics are a huge chunk of Crysis.
Theres also the 'problem' of it beeing beta, thus containing bugs or beeing unbalanced.

Thus i still dont think its compareable to the full game and anyone actualy liking the game wont miss out on the missing parts.

Just so you know, this has never led to bigger sales. Ever. Just ask Electronic Arts - they killed EA Sports on PC due to piracy. Many indie developers have simply stopped developing for PC.

If it's such "good publicity", why is there the same outcry on this website over and over: "What about PC? Where's the PC version? How come only consoles get this?"

This will not affect they're sales, look at Starcraft2, you can find a pirated version of it, play the campaign, and that's it, if you want to play multyplayer you have to buy the game, this will be the case in Crysis2, people woun't buy game for the single player campaign, they will buy it for the multyplayer.

Actually Ravil i know a way to play starcraft multiplayer but not with as much people just look it up Tunngle.net registre and all the games you see their you can play with pirated game versions including starcraft 2

Ok, I think this has gone far enough now. In my experience 'Piracy' is one of those discussions that will go on till the end of the time, so further talk on the matter is now pointless.

Whilst Jonah has been a bit more... passionate about this than normal, he is right in that we here at Strategy Informer do not condone piracy. This news story was merely trying to raise awareness over the problems Piracy can cause, not dish out moral judgements on the matter.

What you choose to do with your life is up to you. All actions have consequences, and it's up to each person individually to make and live with their choices. Please don't try and justify yourselves to the rest of us though - that's how these arguments get out of hand. We have our beliefs, you have yours, we'll just leave it at that.

Piracy is not issue here...at least it shouldn't have been. This is an internal issue to do with Crytek and the leaking of private property into the public domain. If private property is made publicy available to those who use torrents, then this is a far more serious issue. I will not enter an argument over Piracy, as for me it is illegal and damaging...no room for debate. The leaking of property should have been the point of the news article, but unfortunately Piracy was highlighted by the writer of the news piece.
What happened to the good old days of Shareware when games could be played endlessly (edited as they were) and then you could buy? Of course...corporate greed.

Well after a quick Google search I found a legitimate downloadable version from Ubisoft's website: http://www.ubi.com/us/games/info.aspx?pid=45 . Old games are a lot easier to find than you might think, so don't tell me that just because they don't have physical copies in stores that gives you the right to pirate them.

I treat this as a demo that hasn't been released yet so now that I know that it will run smoothly on my rig I'll definitely buy it.

Basically a F2P with microtransactions, highly addictive and fun but the developers have announced that they will be shutting down the game because of lack of commercial success.

Software piracy is bad, but there are much, much worse things out there to worry about. However there are ways to effectively combat piracy. Judging and prosecuting people who download pirated games is easy. Doing something that will encourage them to stop and go buy games is a better way.

I don't "do" it if that's what you mean. The problem is how to encourage the people to stop "doing" it and actually buying original games. Naturally, publishers aka evil corporations aren't making things easy by pumping up the prices and reducing the quality of said games. In many eastern European countries piracy isn't viewed as an criminal act (or a bad thing for that matter) and many people gladly resort to it because game prices are not proportionate to the living standards plus some are more expensive than in western countries because of state regulated taxes and import fees. Digital distribution is rarely used because of poor quality and overpriced internet connection. Gaming is viewed as a childish thing so a person who calls himself a gamer is viewed as a weirdo, someone who doesn't have a social life.
JonahFalcon said in one of his posts that if people are poor and can't afford the games why steal them. As I said before many people do not equate piracy with stealing and that is something that needs to change. Unfortunately piracy cannot be stopped but developers and publishers can lessen it's impact by educating people about it, lowering game prices, improving quality and by NOT BEING EVIL.

"Beta" Crysis 2 Torrent Appears

Electronic Arts is "deeply disappointed" that an incomplete, hacked version of Crysis 2 has appeared a full month before its release. The leak includes the full Campaign, Multiplayer and the Master-keys to activate the product for online use. The hacked version of Crysis 2 is a late beta, but essentially the entire game. EA reported on their official Facebook page: "Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22." "Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community." One has to wonder about the damage pirates are doing when they release versions way before due dates. Whilst Piracy doesn't always hurt the fiscal success of a product, it does make the publishers lash out, and inevitably the only people who really get affected are the average consumers.
