CliffyB on why Gears is a 360 exclusive

Cliff Bleszinski was asked why the Gears of War series has remained an Xbox 360 exclusive title, despite Microsoft only holding the rights to the first game in the series. His answer was quite surprising.

In an interview with gaming blog Electric Pig, Bleszinski was asked if the Gears franchise would appear on any competitor platforms, e.g. the Playstation 3.

His response was interesting: “I think our current set with Microsoft dictates that for us internally it makes more sense for Gears to remain a 360 franchise for the foreseeable future…plus I don’t like the PlayStation 3 controller."

This has not stopped, for instance, Electronic Arts from bringing Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 to the PlayStation 3, of course, but perhaps Bleszinski loves the marketing dollars Microsoft throws his way to promote his game - and sales in the series have been brisk, so there's no compelling reason for the series to go to the PS3.

The Gears of War Triple Pack will be released this Tuesday, Feburary 8, and Gears of War 3 is due this November. There's also Gears of War: Exile coming in 2011, which some are rumoring to be a Kinect-based rail shooter.

I'm in the same boat as you Xyfer. I went from N64 to playstation 1, then playstation 2 (hated the original Xbox), but when the Xbox 360 came out.. I jumped ship! I find the controller to be a lot more comfortable, and to be far more accessible for all genres.

Though ultimately, I'm a PC gamer. ;)

I would have to agree on the part of this guy liking the "marketing dollars". What I don't get is that Microsoft makes Windows, but they don't make games like Halo and Gears of War for it.
