Rumor: PS3 pirates unban selves, ban others

Once again, Sony's efforts to curb piracy on the PlayStation 3 have backfired, and this time it's backfired with some force: not only have pirates become able to un-ban themselves from PlayStation Network, they've also achieved the abilities to ban other users.

Yes, Sony's rootkey exploit has allowed unauthorized users to get unearned mod powers.

Of course, the hacker would require the console ID of a PlayStation 3 in order to ban it, which could only be done if they had access to a furbished console list - or some dolt gives them the code, or worse, some Sony rep allows them to get phished.

According to Destructoid, the mod scene is justifying its actions by calling Sony bullies and criticizing its strong-arm tactics. This does not help George Hotz's case one whit - in fact, it weakens it. The main purpose of the rootkey exploit was to allow gamers to run Linux and homebrew software on their system, not to let some yahoos pirate software and ruin other people's experience on PSN.

If true, Sony may need to recall the PlayStation 3 or produce a quick fix, because right now it's the consumers that are under the thump of these pirates. We'll have more as it develops.

I know this is serious...but I had to laugh. Really though it's beyond a joke, Sony.

"Whether Sony likes it or not, they need to recall the PlayStation 3 or produce the PlayStation 4, because right now, the PS3 is a liberated system in its current shape and there's nothing they can do about it."

FTFY
Personally I'm more interested in the new PSN EULA that allows Sony to snoop all of your data and actions, and then use that information in any way they choose.

Lastly, Destructoid didn't link to any evidence, so this whole story has a good chance of being fake or unproportionally dramatised and the threat minimal.

By the way, it isn't so hard - people did the same unban trick with Xbox Live on the original Xbox.

So how would I "ban" a PSN? Long story short, I made a trade, it kind of went bad, and I need to ban my old PS3. Of course if this person held up their end of the deal after it was banned I could un-ban it correct? Does any one know how I could trace where my old PS3 is?

Dunno K3Spice, this is probably the wrong site to ask that kind of stuff.

Well thx a bunch SONY - this is what happens when you put more effort into the pirates then on the consumer. So pirates exists, and they copy your games, and they will never stop - buhu yeah I feel sorry for you - but my gaming/blue-ray rig just went to the crappers - and your only solution is to sell me a new console?
You really think I would invest in a PS4 after this fiasco? Heck no - one BlueRay player or a PC with enough juice to play some casual games and a BlueRay player and hard drives to store TV shows - heck - that would even let me organize my music the way I want it...

Re: update

Wow, that looks like its a hole in the PSN security net and nothing to do with custom firmwares! Perhaps a modified version of some Sony in-house admin software?
If Sony has their act together, they'll already have a copy and have secured the hole.
Originally I thought it was about pulling IDs from hardware and swapping them using firmware.

Like hell that I will give my PS3 so them can "fix it" I'm against piracy and all, but screw them what the hell the consumer has to do it with the war between them.

I have to admit, that whilst I feel kind of sorry for Sony, I still cant help but chuckle a bit about this. The fact that Sony released that tough-guy statement about banning people, and then only a couple of days after they start doing it, people start un-banning themselves. They are really starting to make Sony appear completely incapable of handling their online entertainment network.

What will the next step be by Sony, rushing out a PS4? Or can they still save their PS3 console with firmware updates..

I don't think they can save it with firmware updates which just include more draconian measures. I have an unhacked PS3 and the best thing Sony can do to stop me installing linux on it (I don't play or own any PS3 games) is upgrade the browser, DNLA and Internet TV functionality. A few more codecs like ogg audio, webm and the mkv container support wouldn't hurt either. Maybe a google apps tie in, ie. email, docs, calender and talk. It's supposed to be a family media centre afterall, not just a games console.

For gamers, I think serial numbers tied to a PSN account is the best bet, same as with the PC, and some better network code+dedicated servers to counter the wire hacks people keep complaining with CoD.

It's starting to look like Sony's lawsuit against Geohot and overfl0w may cost the company more than it's legal fees...

If SONY would be smart - they would make the next PS machine an ordinary PC with BD player and an online version of STEAM portal where you register your games, and where you play your SONY games through, enjoy the benefits of having a machine that comes configured for this as well as being able to branch out on the standard PC market - just make the BlueRay and online store requirements and sell one heck of a controller and allow for Mouse/Keyboard support.
