EA Games president Frank Gibeau comments the PC user base "is gigantic," and admits that while PC retail is flagging the digital business is "awesome".
Margins are better and they've no rules "in terms of first party approvals." PC is "extremely healthy" and it's "totally conceivable" it will be EA's biggest platform.
EA is already gambling big with PC as BioWare is currently developing MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic which is tentatively due for release this fall. "The user base is gigantic," said Frank Gibeau. "PC retail may be a big problem, but PC downloads are awesome."
"The margins are much better and we don’t have any rules in terms of first party approvals. From our perspective, it's an extremely healthy platform. It's totally conceivable it will become our biggest platform." They're keen on the 'freemium' model.
"If you look at the way people play in Asia, PC is the model," he says. "I think that free to play model is coming to the west in a big way." EA had big success with browser-based Battlefield: Heroes and plans for the same with Battlefield Play4Free.
