Ubisoft unveil Rocksmith, a "music experience" with real guitar

Plastic peripherals that ask you to tap a colour? No thanks, says Ubisoft. The publisher has announced Rocksmith which uses real electric guitars.

It's a game with "benefits" as it teaches you how to play a real instrument, and Rocksmith "adjusts gently" to your level of ability to help you learn.

It's accompanied by a standard input jack that can support 'most' electric guitars out there for use with the Xbox 360 or PS3 console. Nintendo Wii is not supported. 45 tracks are expected on the game disc including the Rolling Stones, Nirvana and David Bowie.

Ubi is in talks with Gibson to sort out a $200 Rocksmith bundle that would include an electric guitar. The publisher hopes this can energise the now sharply declining music genre of games as Activision ended Guitar Hero and EA's Rock Band pulls back.

"Guitar Hero is a party game. Rocksmith is a music experience," said Ubisoft marketing SVP, Tony Key. "The dream of playing guitar compared to how many follow through - there's a big gap," he added. "We will create a new generation of guitar players."

Rocksmith releases on Xbox 360 and PS3 this September.

Harmonix beat UbiSoft to it with Rock Band 3's Pro Mode.

But isn't RB3 limited to the cheapy guitars. RB3 core is still a party game.

I'm guessing Rocksmith is more of a tutor for learners than a party game.

No. Harmonix is releasing a real $250 guitar for RB3's pro mode.
