Runic: MMO subs not great as "pretty much everyone" has WoW

Runic Games isn't keen on the monthly subscription fee model for MMOs explains CEO Max Schaefer, as anyone paying subs is with World of Warcraft.

The Torchlight studio believes you're best using another model. Runic's dungeon-crawler is something you can play in small bites or "geek out on all night."

Max Schaefer says he doesn’t think anyone can do subscriptions anymore "because pretty much everyone that does subscriptions has one for World of Warcraft."

“You can’t really approach any MMO project without taking into account World of Warcraft,” said Schaefer. “It’s the elephant in the room of every MMO company.” That 'elephant' has over 12 million subscribers feeding Blizzard with constant revenue.

Schaefer was a founding member of Blizzard North, creator of Diablo and Diablo II. Runic Games' Torchlight is "the kind of game you can play for 20 minutes before you got to go out to dinner, but it's also one that you can geek out on all night. It's just a very accessible format that gives people a chance to enjoy a game rather than work at a game."

Runic are developing Torchlight II which promises to add co-op. Has Blizzard sucked up all the worthwhile subscription fees opporunities in the MMO market? Check out the full Torchlight interview between Max Schaefer and Charge Shot.

Then it's going to be microtransactions based?

I guess so. No monthly fees, and it won't be free. So... microtransactions are the only option.

Well CCP GAmes and Cryptic would disagree with the no subscriptions comments (trhe former producing "EVE Online" whiuch would be the top MMO if not for "WoW"), and BioWare would be shaking their heads as well. If you like the game, the money each month is more than well spent. If not, cancel your subcription for a while. "Cataclysim" wasn't the universal hit with "WoW" players Blizzard are claiming it to be, as a lot of old time gamers didn't even bother with it.
Might not work for, Runic, but does work for more than Blizzard.

You can do okay with MMO subs, but not the earning power most companies want. Also MMO's put a lot of stress on a company all around.

You can develop a Non-MMO game and get immediate sales from it. As not a lot of people try every MMO or even like them. You don't have upkeep costs of servers, and a team to keep content updates going.
