NPD figures reveal that Neversoft's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is truly a legend in US videogame retail history as it holds the highest gross.

Second to the music game is Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops at $787.4 million. Modern Warfare 2 is 4th with $713.6 million. Rock Band is 5th.

Guitar Hero III released back in November 2007 while Call of Duty: Black Ops released just last year. These NPD figures count only the retail performance in North America.

Here's the top 10 list of US titles:

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock $830.9 million
Call of Duty: Black Ops $787.4 million
Wii Fit (inc: Balance Board) $736.6 million
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 $713.6 million
Rock Band $670.7 million
Wii Play (inc: Wii Remote)
Guitar Hero World Tour
Wii Fit Plus
Mario Kart Wii (inc: Wii Wheel)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

It's worth noting of course that peripherals are a part of some of those titles, like Guitar Hero, which pushes up the cost of each sale - so technically you could call them dirty cheaters. Activision has since cancelled the Guitar Hero franchise after poor sales.
