Kawata: 3DS Revelations "a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5"

The Nintendo 3DS exclusive Resident Evil: Revelations is thought of by Capcom as a "direct sequel" to third-person shooter Resident Evil 5, packed with all-new stuff.

It's "full of new, innovative ideas" and characters. It harkens back to being all about survival horror, the "very genre Resident Evil established." Can the 3DS deliver?

"Unlike Mercenaries, which is all about shooting action, Revelations is all about survival horror, the very genre Resident Evil established," Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata, in an interview with magazine Nintendo Power.

"We actually think of Revelations as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5 and it will be full of new, innovative ideas and characters." Will Revelations suffer as Rockstar's GTA: Chinatown Wars did? That revisited the series roots but didn't get wide enough exposure.

If Revelations is a sequel to RE5 and goes back to its survival horror 'at heart' roots then the next-gen crowd are likely going to feel cold-shoulder syndrome.
