Sony denies having outdated servers and no firewall

Sony claims that cybersecurity expert Dr. Gene Spafford was lying when he stated that Sony's PlayStation Network "was unpatched and had no firewall installed."

Spafford had testified in the US House of Representatives Subcomittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade's hearing that not only had Sony lacked security, but two to three months before the attack, the vulnerability was reported "in an open forum monitored by Sony employees," although Sony took no action to rectify the situation.

However, Sony insists, "The previous network for Sony Network Entertainment International and Sony Online Entertainment used servers that were patched and updated recently, and had multiple security measures in place, including firewalls."

I find it hard to believe Sony had no security systems in place, otherwise we'd have had this occur a long time ago... though I suspect the chances of their software being out of date is marginally higher.

With a company as big as Sony, a breach like this is unacceptable.

@ VHugoSama. If they were totally in the sewer, then they wouldn't exist.
