The last remaining founding figure of the 'Direct X box' project for Microsoft, Otto Berkes, has tended his resignation to Microsoft to "move on" to new things.

He was "one of the crazy guys" that came to the corporate giant with the idea of a videogames console to rival Sony's PlayStation. He has "no regrets".


Microsoft certainly has zero regrets with their thriving Xbox business thanks to stellar revenue from Xbox Live subscriptions and sales through the marketplace.

"They talked me into joining up with them and helping to make it happen," said former head of Microsoft's games publishing business, Ed Fries. He was another of the founding visionaries for Xbox who left Microsoft. Otto Berkes was the last to remain.

"No regrets, but it's time to move on for me," Berkes told the Seattle Times. "I'm very proud of what I was able to accomplish here." The games industry has been profoundly shaped by that ambitious little 'Direct X box' dream, giving Sony someone to run against.
