Gaijin Entertainment is developing Birds of Steel, a WWII aerial combat simulator spanning critical battles between air forces from in the Pacific and Europe.

Choose from Allies, Axis or Japanese aircraft with online multiplayer featuring "massive" dogfights and co-op missions. Gaijin is no stranger to the skies.

Their previous airborne entries include World of Planes, Apache Air Assault, Wings of Luftwaffe and Wings of Prey. The studio is after first-person shooter fans with Birds of Steel as they "aim to bring the seat-of-their-pants skill and daring of dogfighting and aerial combat to a wider audience", read the press release.

"Birds of Steel pushes the throttle of realism by giving fans what they've been missing when it comes to co-operative online gameplay, incredibly realistic visuals and game dynamics, while spanning the entirety of the war's air campaigns."

Birds of Steel releases on Xbox 360 and PS3 in early 2012.

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 O_O that is wat I call a nice Sim-game! This one is not for the PC :s

Yeah, I feel like this will be a sim-lite by design. the consoles are not really made ffor all the pedals and different buttons you'd need to push in a real sim like cliffs of dover (despite it's bugginess)

I still play Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 to this day as it is still a great flight sim. I remember growing up when simulators were a dime a dozen... what I wouldn't give for those days again! *Begins to daydream about Wing Commander*

oh wow, wing commander definately needs some next-gen treatment.

Add some multiplayer. Imagine the il-2 crowd getting their hands on a new Wing Commander, made with a dynamic campaign!

I would pre-order that in a heartbeat! Seriously, they need to make a new Wing Commander soon, and not a top-down arcade like Arena, I'm mean a return to form with a more mission-based game like the original WC (ala the dynamic campaign you mentioned) or an incredible story-driven experience like WCIII and WCIV.

A non-PC flight sim?!

Talk about ignoring your target audience.....

Yeah, is there a lot of flight sticks and stuff that works well with the consoles - and do they sell? There is a die-hard core fan base for flight sims on PC's...

@SirRoderick, agreed, they probably just though-hey, let's make a flight sim, and then heard there was more cash to be made on consoles :S

Exactly Roderick, if I play a flightsim, I play it on PC not on console even though I have one.

They did this with "Brids of Prey" then released a PC version "Wings of Prey", that to many was fun with lush visuals, but I can't stand it. I bought it at full price and was terribly dismayed with timed missions, questionable Sim elements that you couldn't customise and just a series of Helter-Skelter 'get from A to B in the time frame and shoot down/blow up C'. Either as an Arcade game or as a'Sim' it failed for me.
If you enjoy true Flight Sims, then go for "Rise of Flight" (a true gem), "IL2: Cliffs of Dover" (getting better with each patch) or "DCS: A-10C Warthog" (a true 'study sim'). The latter will really test your mettle, as everything, and I mean everything is fully simulated. If you're into helicopters, I'd say go for "DCS: KA-50 Black Shark".
When Gaigin does port this to PC, and they will given the sales for "Wings of Prey" I won't be touching it as it will still be an Arcade flight 'game' (pretty, to be sure). I'll be sticking with what I play now, and "RoF" is getting it's new update this w/e by all accounts with a brand new full Career Mode (like "Red Baron"'s).

I'll be passing. Too busy with the flight sims I have now.

I think I would like to test the multiple screen set-up if I was to try a flight sim. But I don't think I would have the patience to get into one of the more advanced ones...

I can't believe that they actually release a FLIGHT SIMULATOR for consoles and not for PC! This is outrageous! What the heck is there to simulate on consoles? The only thing that can be simulated on consoles is a penalty kick in FIFA (if there's even that option included).
By Thibby (SI Core Veteran) on May 27, 2011

Yes, you can simulate a penalty kick in FIFA, it works quit good actually.

@Bosnian
There will be a PC version, just as there was with "Brids of Prey" (that was "Wings of Prey"). Have no fear, it will be here.

I hope so, since I haven't played a good airplane dog-fight since IL-2 Sturmovik! :) I still install it from time to time and play, but I need to buy myself a new external controller soon :) Thanks for giving me hope, Herod :D

If you like jet aircraft, and was a fan of Jane's flight sims (as I was), they are releasing a multiplatform flight sim/game: "JASF" Q4 2011.

I still play IL-2 and find it a very enjoyable game, only the graphics are outdated, the game-mechanics are still perfectly up to date :)

Graphics don't matter to me if the gameplay is good enough. IL-2 has an unmatched gameplay when it comes to WW2 dogfights :) BTW, thanks for the recommendation Herodotus ;) I will check it right away!

P.S. Herodotus, do you know anything about the system requirements that this game will have?
