Battlefield and Call of Duty 'war of words' from EA and Activision

The first-person shooter crown will suffer an inevitable coup reckons EA's Jens Uwe Intat as Battlefield takes back a title once held by the publisher giant.

Activision meanwhile seems humoured by it all, joking that EA mentions Call of Duty "more than we do" and thanks them for "assistance in building awareness".

“Certainly. The only question is when that day will be. And for me, the sooner the better," said EA Europe boss Jens Uwe Intat, asked if they'll reclaimed their FPS crown. A lot is riding on DICE's Battlefield 3 for 2011 but EA have other IP horses to bet on.

"It’s our champion this year, yes. But it is true that we have a few more in the genre, so we will see how many different franchises we will continue with in that space.”

Over in the Call of Duty camp, Activision's CEO of Publishing, Eric Hirshberg, gives the impression that they're not at all worried by the 'shot across the bow' from EA.

"Well, I think EA might talk about our games in the press more than we do. So, the first thing I say to them is ‘Thanks for the assistance in building awareness,” joked Hirshberg.

"But when you think about it, we’ve had tough competition every year for Call of Duty. It’s never been easy. This is one of the most competitive genres in one of the most competitive industries. Last year we had Halo: Reach and Medal of Honor, and it’s not like they weren’t amazing developers gunning for the top of this mountain either."

“And it’s the same this year – Gears of War is back along with lots of other games.”

“So, of course, we take all the competition really seriously. But at the end of the day I really mean it when I say we are focusing on the finish line, not the competition," he continued. "We are making the best game we can, and are throwing every resource, innovation and all the creativity we can at it. And hopefully that will maintain our position.”

Battlefield 3 releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this fall. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC November 8th.

I don't know what's the deal about, I mean, if you like CoD, play it and don't hate other titles. Same goes for those who like BF more than CoD. Personally, I like both games VERY much, but I find Battlefield a lot more fun to play online. CoD beats any war-based FPS when it comes to single player action, but in multiplayer, I believe that BF is the supreme ruler. I just hope the BF3 will be what I'm expecting it to be.

It really comes down to which you like better for what, MP or SP. I know that I like Cod for sp. BF, except or the Bad company games, hasn't really had a game that really has a story. Bf 2142 would have been alot better if it had a Sp story. Since I don't play Mp I can't say about MP for either game.

I haven't played Bad Company at all. I'm still into Battlefield 2, and I play it every day. It has an astounishing multiplayer action, because it requires both tactics, cooperative teams and good FPS skills. It's a very pleasant experience, if the team is right and ready to cooperate.

I was looking to maybe get both - but MoW 3 is removing much of the idea with the MP design choices, Most are rumors - but BF3 is made for PC's - that is a heavy argument in its favor.

@FoolWolf Yep, that's why I have high expectations on BF3.

I play both and enjoy both for different reasons, and have "CoD" and "BF:BC 2", as well as "MoH" happily co-existing on my PC. The same will happen when "BF 3", "MW 3" and "MoH 2" are released. What's the dealy-o, Daddy-O?
Only drawback for "CoD:MW 3" that I see so far is the return of matchmaking with IWNet, and dropping dedicated servers re-introduced in "BlOps". Bad move guys, and just shows how console-centric the series has become.
