Sony Online Entertainment has announced a new co-op shooter, Payday: The Heist, which can best be described as Left 4 Dead with bank robbers.

Payday comes with six campaigns, called "heists", that include a range of criminal missions like robbing a bank, breaking into a prison to free some compatiots, and armored car hijacking. Players must co-operate to do things like crack security, hold hostages, deal with the police, and so forth.

There's a lot of leeway on how to accomplish the heists too. Players may decide to be pacificistic and go a stealth route such as taking out security cameras and avoiding bystanders and police, or simply go in guns a-blazing, shooting everyone in sight. If the police capture a player, a hostage can be used to trade him back.

Players can have one of three specialties: assault, sharpshooter or support, and each class has their own equipment, such as trip mines, silenced pistols, and machine guns. Players can also share ammo and medkits much like players do in Left 4 Dead. Like Left 4 Dead, there are always four man teams, with the AI taking over for unclaimed spots.

The game will be released for PC and PlayStation 3, and will be shown off at E3. There is no release date yet for the game.

Reminds me a bit of BlOps Zombie levels. With cops instead of zombies. :S
