E3 2011: A lot of titles "flirt with vulgarity" says Far Cry 3 dev

Ubisoft Montreal's Jason Vandernberghe is attached to Far Cry 3 which got a teasing trailer this week from E3. They aim for an "entertaining, mature experience."

The problem is that many games "flirt with vulgarity," and if done wrong it "becomes pornography." Far Cry is about a "fairly decent guy" who breaks the law.

"We’re rated M, so we can do just about anything we want… mwahaha! It is absolutely my ambition to flirt with, and not cross the taste barrier," joked Ubisoft's Vandernberghe.

“A lot of games flirt with vulgarity. And I think if done incorrectly, vulgarity becomes pornography. I’m not here to make pornography. I’m here to make an entertaining, mature experience. I think that’s our goal and hopefully it comes through."

"One of the great things about Far Cry is that we’re in an environment where anything goes. That said, to me, Far Cry has never been about whether you’re going to be good or evil. It’s a game about a fairly decent guy who is… not a law-abiding citizen,” he said.

Running and gunning isn't the only way in Far Cry 3, despite its nature. “A gun is one way to solve many problems in this kind of environment. It’s absolutely not the only one. One of the things we want to focus on in our narrative is the consequences of heroism."

"I’m the narrative director. My goal is to address that in as mature a way – sophisticated isn’t the right word – believable – a way as I can,” Vandernberghe explained.

Far Cry 3 releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2012. Check out the gameplay teaser from E3 2011 below to watch Ubisoft Montreal's efforts drip sheer awesomeness.

Just as "Far Cry 2" seemed to get as the hype machine went into overdrive (Devil's Advocate here).
Vulgarity - what a lovely word. I must use it today.

I don't know, I'm not keen on how they name them as sequels, but they don't have anything to do with one another. Still, looks intriguing, if only for the Joker fella.

I'm with you on that one, Herod. But man, at the same time it really does look like it's changed for the better.
So I dunno, maybe I'm a sucker, but I might just give Farcry 3 one more chance.

I have a feeling FC 3 will be quite a good game, definitely better than FC 2 at least.

Looks to be a very linear game, with that 2D jungle at the start serving as an impenetrable corridor. Might be wrong, but this is multiplatform after all (and boy, does it show). As for the language...very much overdone and unneccessary.

Most multiplatform games tend to be made for the console, and if there is a PC version, it is based off the console version. Fortunately that is not the case with Battlefield 3. It's going to be a smash.

"Duke Nukem Forever" is a PC game ported to console and that has failed in the attempt miserably with the console versions looking like they're straight out of 2001 (the year, not the movie). You can tweak the config file to get it to run in DX10 mode for PC (which does enhance the graphics), but you shouldn't have to.

I'd say that a game that has been in the works for 14 years should: 1, Have up to date graphics. 2, should not have bugs. 3, be enjoyable to play, not have crappy controls.

There's no way DNF can be up to expectations. It was only in actual development in it's current incarnation for about 2 years, I think. Gearbox acquired it after the previous company bankrupted.

Yeah right, we get a 2011 game with 2008 or 7 graphics.
