Latest victim of hacking: Epic Games
Posted: 11.06.2011 23:54 by JonahFalcon Comments: 11
Epic Games has become the latest victim of a hacker attack, with user passwords exploited, using a "brute force attack" on encryption. Epic has responded emailing all registered users that their passwords have been reset.

The email reads:

Our Epic Games web sites and forums were recently hacked. After some downtime, they’re back up and running now.

The hackers may have obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plaintext passwords weren’t revealed, but it’s possible that those passwords could be obtained by a brute-force attack on the encrypted passwords. Therefore, we have reset all passwords. Your new password at the bottom of this message.

The Unreal Developer Network (UDN) hasn’t been compromised. Thankfully, none of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other financial data.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience, and appreciate everyone’s patience as we wrestle our servers back under control.

Tim Sweeney

Founder, Epic Games Inc

As has the Internation Monetry Fund, it has been revealed. This reveals sensitive financial data pertaining to whole countries has been put at risk.
The CIA has warned of an impending crisis from cyber-terrorism and I don't think that's overstating the situation. The hacker group 'Anonymous' has declared war on all major corporations and governmental agencies and that could just lead us into a world of hurt.
Time these wretches were seriously targeted as a clear and present danger to society.

Unfortunately, it's only really just starting and the effects will be far more disastrous than just a gamer's password or financial info being hacked.

"Spanish police arrested three men on Friday they claim are members of the hacker group Anonymous. The Spanish police believe the three men are part of a Anonymous cell that organized attacks on web servers of the PlayStation store, two Spanish banks, and government sites in Algeria, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Libya, Iran, Spain and New Zealand.
One of the three suspects had a server in his apartment in northern Spain that was apparently used in the attacks on the websites."

SONY got hacked?! OMG THOSE CHEAP CORPORATE BASTARDS!!!

EPIC got hacked? OMG HAX0RS!

I just like the discrepancies in these things. Admittedly not all these attacks are of the same scale, but it's starting to get a little bit of a double-standard.
