Riccitiello thinks Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello thinks Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3, even though he thinks the latter is the better game. The reason? Modern Warfare 3 is more for the mass market, while Battlefield 3 is aimed at the "hardcore".

"The honest truth is I think Modern Warfare is going to be a really good game," stated Riccitiello "I think that in a weird way it's starting to feel a little to me like the Disneyland abstraction of a war game - a little bit jump the shark. So it feels a little bit like that to me. And I think there's a market for that."

Riccitiello added, "I think our game is more authentic. It's definitely going to do a lot of things better. Lighting's better, physics is better, animations are better, particle effects are better, vehicles are better. I think there's a lot of things to like about our product and I think it's going to be a great battle."

"I do think we've got the better game, the better tack. The question is, 'So, if the gamer buys our game and the mass audience buys their game, where do the two meet?' And all I want to do, if you will, is to have them rot from the core."

Which game will you be picking up? Let us know.

BF3 for sure, and perhaps MW3 as well.

First thing that came to mind was
"Sure, the flies flock to - well lets end it there."

I really don't care about MW3.

Battlefield 3 won't sell as many copies on PC as Modern Warfare 3 is because you won't put it on Steam.

You greedy, short sighted, idiots.

You fail to realize that real gamers don't play just one game. Like Gabe Newell once said, Modern Warfare helps out the other shooters because if you like one franchise, you'll try out others. No two games are real competitors because nothing is keeping someone from buying both.

EA doesn't realize that to beat Call of Duty, you don't only have to make a better game, you have to make it cheaper and more accessible too.

"I think our game is more authentic."

Huh you get a gun and you shoot who cares about the rest.

I'll be purchasing both titles, and it's refreshing to see some honesty from a big name in games publishing. "MW 3" will be a huge seller, as "CoD" always is but it's like comparing a kid's bag of lollies with a fine dinner at a good restaurant...priced the same.
"CoD" however is accompanied by obscenely priced DLC as we've all seen, but have yet to discover what EA will do with the pricing for their added (or unlocked) content.

I'm just going for BF. But yeah both will probably be decent. Though I prefer the mentioned one.

I definitely won't be buying MW3, but my room mate will probably get it.

BF is more my kind of game. Though i may wait a bit before picking it up.

well I won't be playing "MW 3" as for me "CoD" ended at "CoD 2"...just too slow on the reflexes now. I'll be buying it as the annual birthday pressie for my son. "BF" is more my cup of tea as well (more tactical than twitch).

I'll probably get both sooner or later. Not sure when I'll explore the MP modes on either games though. Or if I'll bother at all.

BF has always been horribly imbalanced in MP, tho.

How do you mean Jonah? I think that the MP balance in BF worked pretty well in BFBC2.
