Team Fortress 2 going free-to-play?
Posted: 22.06.2011 08:51 by Comments: 17
Valve Software added several free-to-play titles to its Steam digital distribution platform, which included MMOs like Spiral Knights and Champions Online. According to a posting on NeoGAF, class-based multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 may go the same route.

NeoGAF's "Drkirby" found something interesting when pouring through the registry, uncovering what looked to be a test version of the alleged F2P game, listed as "Valve TestApp440 Test 1". The game attached to #440 is none other than Team Fortress 2 the number is even shown in the game's product URL.

The TestApp440 is check-marked under the "Subscriptions" tab as having no cost, according to the registry entry. A "low violence" version was also spotted in the registry, for those squeamish Germans (the entry had a DE country tag.)

Since Team Fortress 2 was released way back in 2007 alongside Portal - which was given away for free by Valve as well - Valve may give away the game and microtransaction it. Stay tuned.

Bought it ages ago so don't care really. What I do care about is the new influx of fresh players to the game, perhaps getting rid of the hardcore element who make casual gaming a nightmare.

Basic training? PAH!
A real man jumps into a match straight away! No better way to learn.....or die for that matter.

Been playing a couple hours now and it is a blast! Besides buying items etc. you get random drops occasionally it seems, so if you're willing to spend some time (they don't come fast) there really is no need to spend a penny.

Hell, you'll do fine without any item at all.

Arg, am getting error messages saying I can't connect to the VAC-server. I might be playing for 5 seconds or an hour, but I'm getting cut off. Apparently a lot of TF2 players are getting the same. Might have something to do with an influx of new players I guess.

Still sucks donkeyballs though.
