The latest build of the Unreal Development Kit has been shown off by Epic Games thanks to Adhesive Games' Hawken, an online mech combat title.

Using a "cutting-edge game engine with no start-up cost" is an important opportunity for indie studios, says Adhesive art director Khang Le. Mechs!

Developer Adhesive Games choose the UDK because of its reputation. "We were familiar with its reputation as possibly the most licensed game engine in the industry," said Khang Le. Their online mech assault game has been getting notice and praise.

"Being able to begin production using a cutting-edge game engine with no start-up cost offers an important opportunity to indie developers like us.”

“Once we decided to create a graphics-intense multiplayer game, the Unreal Engine looked like the clear choice. With Unreal you get a console-ready engine that has been proven with bestselling released games.”

“Within a month of starting Hawken,” says Le, “we were able to test out a prototype.” For more on the Epic Games showcase of Hawken check out the official UDK website. Hawken releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC at an undisclosed date.
