AMD: Xbox 720 will have 'Avatar quality graphics'

In the August issue of Official Xbox Magazine, processor card manufacturer AMD claims that the Xbox 720 will be capable of creating CGI on the level of James Cameron's Avatar, something even current gen PCs are incapable of.

AMD's director of ISV relationships Neal Robison gushed in the magazine that gamers have a lot to excited about. According to Robison, the Xbox 720 would be not only capable of Avatar-level graphics, but advanced A.I. and physics to the degree that a Grand Theft Auto-style open world game would be able to give every pedestrian and character an individual AI personalty and reaction, rather than the one-AI mob mentality of current games.

AMD is the current card manufacterer for the Xbox 360, and while they haven't been confirmed for the same role in the Xbox 720, it's likely that they will be.

So I guess it won't be supporting PhysX effects as this is a proprietry utility of Nvidia (unsupported by AMD).
"Current PC..." - hard to define what that means with new GPU's coming out evey month or so.

@neilmike when this console generation came out, it was way ahead of PC's at that time as well. PC's only overtook it maybe one year ago. I'm not referring to raw specs, but to the performance they are capable of outputting. Simply put, PC's would get a ridiculous boost in power if they didn't have the OS and all the other small, but adding up processes eating away at CPU and RAM.

crap...live is already 19$-50$ already...you'd probably pay atleast 100 bbucks a month to play with other people with CGI graphics...i don't think microsoft's 720 will be that amazing -_-

A console more powerful than a PC. Xboxes are good consoles but I doubt they'll ever be able to keep with the capabilities of a PC.

Highly doubt it... When the current gen of consoles came out they weren't that far ahead of your average gaming PC... Although it wouldn't be a bad thing if it where true -_-

It is inevitable that one day we'll have "Avatar" level of graphics on PC and Consoles. I guess that day will come in about 10 years, maybe less. Just remember the level of graphics in 2001 and look at it now. Totally worlds apart.

Been thinking a lot about this... Xbox to Xbox 360 was a HUGE performance upgrade... Same with Ps2 to Ps3... Also looking at graphic quality differences between the previous and current generation consoles... I think next generation consoles will have near CGI quality, while the generation after that will have CGI quality...

Look at a bunch of random movies containing a fair share of CGI, the quality is quite obviously not uniform. Saying something is CGI-quality doesn't mean a damn thing.

Bah, I just don't care enough about graphics TBH....

Problem is, CGI is a VERY vague definition. If we follow it by what it means, every single game has CGI, since it's... y'know... computer generated :P Even the early monstrosities we saw in movies are still technically CGI.
By the time the next generation arrives, I expect to see the CGI in movies to be way better than what it is today.

Usually when a person refers to CGI, that person is talking about current CGI... Basically the average quality of CGI provided by movies in the year that using CGI quality as a referenced was used.

You may not care about graphics, but I would rather play BF2 then play duke nukem.... Graphics help immerse you in the experience.

Also when graphics increase, so does capabilities brought by games... GPU's get faster so does the CPU... Just look at what's capable on the last and current generation of consoles...

True, graphics at the same time matter and don't matter.
Given a choice between a great looking but lame game and an average looking but fun to play game there's no contest.
But if the fun but average looking game looked even better then it would actually make it into a better more immersive game as well.
Off course there's also physics, AI and sound effects that kinda fall into this 'gfx' category and need to be good enough as well.

So bring on avatar-like gfx on the consoles as soon as possible, though i too kinda doubt they can do that in the next 2 years or so.

Yeah, I don't know why people assume it's going to be called the 720... Besides when I first heard that years ago, I googled it... Found out that the 720 just gives me results for not a new xbox, but the first generation xobx... So...

Just googled it again for the hell of it... Turns out it finally gives results for a next generation console...
