Ubisoft has announced that the beta for their browser-based, free-to-play online strategy game, Castle Empire, is now available for testing by North American gamers. European players already know the game as The Settlers Online.

Built by The Settlers developer Blue Byte, Castle Empire will allow players to turn their simple plots of land into mighty empires by producing and trading valuable goods with friends, building towns and villages, journeying into the wild to discover new areas, and engaging in battles with anyone that stands in their way.

“The game has had an excellent initial Beta phase in Europe, adding to Ubisoft’s growing list of top-notch free-to-play, browser-based games, and we’re excited to begin rolling it out to new territories,” said Chris Early, Vice President of Digital Publishing at Ubisoft North America. “Castle Empire is a highly entertaining game that highlights Ubisoft's strategy to bring enjoyable experiences to their players while expanding its gaming expertise.”

Players can enter the beta by simply signing up at the official site here.

Why would they change the name of the game, aren't the settlers a worldwide known franchise?

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense that they'd swap a known franchise name for something completely generic like castle empire. But maybe they have a reason...

Has anyone tried this? Is it any fun?

Yea 'browser based' has a bad sound to it, though i wouldn't mind if the game is still fun, haven't tried it yet.
