Microsoft has revealed in its financial reprots to investors that the Xbox 360's revenue grew by 45% for the year, while 13.7 million units have been shipped, which represents an increase from 2010's 10.3m. The Xbox 360 has officially become the top selling console over the past 12 months.

"EDD revenue increased primarily reflecting higher Xbox 360 platform revenue. Xbox 360 platform revenue grew $2.7 billion or 48 per cent, led by increased volumes of Xbox 360 consoles, sales of Kinect sensors, and higher Xbox Live revenue," said the firm.

The profit was not marred by the increased costs in research in development (a 12% rise in costs to $199m) and marketing (12% increase as well.)

Overall, Microsoft sales for the entire fiscal year was $69.94 billion, which represented a $23.15 billion profit.

This surely has something to do with there being no great new wii games, otherwise it would have maintained its lead.

The wii's lack of hardware ump has finally caught up with it. That and the fact Microsoft now has it's own heavy marketing chuck targeting the casual crowd with the kinnect. Nintendo let the ball slip to Microsoft.

Actually, Nintendo and developers have abandoned the Wii thanks to the Wii U.

Well, Sony has a real competitor, and time of domination (PS1, PS2) is history.

I'm not too keen on their "screen in my controller" idea.

Me neither, I think the Wii U isn't what it should be, if you talk about the hardware.

Thibby, remember what peeps said about launch of Wii, everyone in Nintendo believed that this console is the last in their history. But it turns far more than impressive.

TBH the Wii was a complete fail for hardcore gamers like me.

That's why the 360 is doing so well now. At it's core is a "hardcore" gaming community and with kinnect you can get all those silly casual games that families love.
