Despite launching Guild Wars 2, developer ArenaNet will keep the doors open for the original free-to-play Guild Wars as long as there's "an active player base."
They can see a lot of gamers "keeping both" as neither require "active cost to maintain" player accounts. Guild Wars is a "very cost effective" game to support.
"The only incentive we need is to have an active player base. Guild Wars is a very cost effective game to support and because there is no active cost to maintain both a Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 account," said ArenaNet's global brand director Chris Lye.
"We could see a lot of players keeping both." This news will undoubtedly cheer up Guild Wars players who just can't bear to let go of their long time characters. No MMO developer likes to cannibalize their own player base so hopefully both will prove strong.
LucasArts called it quits on Star Wars Galaxies as BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic nears launch. Sony Online Entertainment said they had considered a free-to-play model but decided it wouldn't work out. Galaxies pulls the plug later this year.
