After Rage is released, id Software will be releasing the Doom 3 source code for free, allowing modders to make their own games using the graphic engine.

This was announced during id co-founder John Carmack's keynote at QuakeCon 2011, who stated that these releases of Id code are a "challenge to other developers," and will be a boon to both id Software and "the community."

At last year's QuakeCon, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein were also released to the mod community.

That screen shot was not taken on very high settings was it. The engine is getting a bit old but it's not that old :).

A nice move, it will be interesting to see what the comunity can do with such an engine.
