My CPU is showing age in all these new games, might be time to upgrade...

Same here, but if I upgrade my core 2 duo to an i5 or a sandy bridge i5 I also need a new motherboard, new DDR3 RAM and, since these requuire power, new PSU. CPU's really are bottlenecks when you want to upgrade to a newer generation. I wonder if the system isn't designed that way...

It's nice to see quads finnaly slowly becoming required and finally used.

@unsilviu

Sandy bridge is quite power efficient. Forget the other stuff, Sandy bridge is where it's at right now (we'll see about Bulldozer when it actually arrives.

It's worth it, i went from q9550 to 2600k (used) and the difference in some games is quite obvious (i'm heavily throttled by the GPU in graphic intensive games - 4890)
I can't notice any difference while just casually using the PC though.

i7 870 (has older CPu's in there so you can compare)

Depending on your cpu it might not use any more power.

Unless you have a really old PSU of a lesser quality in that case i'd not risk putting my new shinies on something like that.

Hmm so it's power efficient? My PSU is a 400W, but it's a really good quality one(Fujitsu Siemens), I'm currently running a 500W-rated GPU without problems. But the quantity of power is still too low for me to risk my "shinies" :P

Yes, the 'shinies' are too important to play with their safety :).

Well a good 400W PSU might be better than a cheap 600W one, so it's not all in the watts. They just play it safe when they require 500w cause they know tons of people have cheap PSUs.

But i still would not feel good about having a high end PC on anything less than a quality 500w.
They don't cost that much more than the cheap brands as long you don't go for the modular ones.

Standard fair for Sys Req's these days, an won't be taxing at all on my rig. No X11 support by the looks of things, though. Oh well....
