Retail copies of Battlefield 3 will require Origin

Regardless of how users purchase Battlefield 3, the installation of Origin will be required. Even those that buy the game from retail, or from other digital distribution vendors like Direct2Drive will have to install the service.

This requirement, of course, is only needed for PC gamers; Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players will only need to login in-game to their EA account.

This was confirmed by DICE's global Battlefield community manager, Daniel Matros, who tweeted the news earlier this week.

It's not as demanding as it sounds, though. This had been a practice for years for Steam, including the very first Steam game, Half-Life 2, and many games since have required a Steam installation to run. Also, the EA Download feature has basically been folded into the Origin service.

Regardless, does this seem like too much of an imposition from EA? Let us know.

I really could care less... But if Origin is going to increase my gameplay qaulity with friends, then sure this is pretty good...

He forgot one huge thing - Valve never lied about STEAM or said in public releases that a competitor was to stringent just to become worse yourself. Also STEAM has more then one brand of games... MS, Valve, EA, UbiSoft and Blizzard.... we really are moving towards streamed gaming. If all companies will demand their own services to be run - make bloody browser games. Or of course, stop the crap about being so and so caring about the PC players when console gamers get all the easy stuff...
Not overly suprised, Origin has developed quickly over a few months.

It depends how it turns out. If it's not more restrictive than steam than maybe it will be ok.
I'd prefer to have as few different gaming clients installed as possible, so i'm not too happy about this development but i'll still manage :).

Too bad that probably all major publishers are going to do the same eventually :(.

As long as it's not intrusive, I don't really care. It will cause a stir among the "constant online connection required" crowd, but won't inconvenience the usual gamer....hopefully.
Still, for me it's a trend I am not liking very much, comparing it more with GFWL and UPlay than Steam.

You'll be able to play it offline - though most people will be playing it online anyway.

They can force me to wear a bikini while playing it. Gonna get this in any case. Though not sure if one should wait until a dozen of patches or so. Well I'm sure I wont.
