World of Warcraft getting more casual

Not only is the subscription base of World of Warcraft getting smaller, but the casual population is growing, with players so unfamiliar with the concept of an MMO that they struggle with the concept of looting bodies of slain enemies.

In an interview with World of Warcraft lead designer Tom Chilton, the designer admitted, "We struggle with getting players through the first 30 minutes because the audience that we get for new players becomes increasingly more casual over time."

Some of the issues the new players have are with such basic issues as "controlling the camera in a 3D space, moving their character, and often, they are unfamiliar with RPG concepts such as looting a monster after you kill it."

Chilton states that most of the difficulty comes from the first five levels, after which the players become acclimated to the system, "I think with users from level one to five, we just need to hold their hands a little bit more effectively in terms of teaching them how to actually move and fight, and do a quest, turn in a quest, and loot creatures, that kind of stuff."

This is an interesting trend, because in most MMO lifecycles, the hardcore element is usually the last to turn off the light before the game is shuttered.

So general players are getting more casual and noobish... great. But I don't think this necessarily signifies a decline in WoW itself, it's just that WoW is the only high-profile RPG except DA:2 that still uses the drag to move interface. Nowadays Mass Effect-styled games give you more direct control and automatic looting of only what is necessary.

@unsilviu: No, less subscribers signifies a decline in WoW.

True, I personally hope they either make it drastically better next expansion, or just close it and make another Warcraft RTS. But even if they do nothing, the current population would make it subsist for a couple of years at least.

I am one of those guys who only started playing WoW this year. Eventually I abandoned it, as even at higher levels the game is still not very new-player friendly.

The community as a whole is very anti-noob. Which causes the game to lose players like myself.

I guess it is as Blizzard themselves stated at one time. If released today, "WoW" would not be anywhere even remotely close to how popular it became.

I don't like WOW, but I like the idea of it become casual, or cheaper.

Another Warcraft RTS would be awesome! I do like WoW though and while im not currently playing it I still keep up too date with news, and from what iv been seeing Blizzard is really trying hard to keep it running and catering more and more to community interests. Next patch for example they are bringing out bieng able to change equipment models, something that the community has wanted for ages.

@Sporey ...... WC IV would be nice , cant wait

but guys .... i cant believe what the world is coming to ... seriously .

Do you remember what the word "Gamer" used to mean ?
What games used to be like ?

I miss the Days of Contra kicking my ass ( when i was 8 cause i started playing games at the age of 3 )
because i was too newbish to beat it ....

Real gamers used to be those Unkillable Gods that beat every single Singleplayer Game that was Deemed Hard ..... they beat every other player in Multiplayer games .

but now , we get people who call themselves GAMERS , and havnt heard of Contra .... or Starcraft .. or freaking Diablo.

people must learn that not everyone is meant to play games . Gaming is a SKILL a TALENT . and if you cant beat a game and you want it to be easier , dont bitch about it and get better .

The only MODERN game that actually could be deemed as HARD is Demon's souls.

I miss the old Way of Gaming where gameplay mattered , and not the freaking story or the graphics , a good game is based upon its gameplay ! thats IT ... everything else is a bonus.
if the gameplay sux , i dont really give a damn about the story , if i wanted a compelling story , id read a book.

Gaming surely has changed, Bone and so has the the industry and the consumer. With everything digital, many rely on games to provide eveerything for them. It's one reason I don't go back to old, old games (pre-heavy graphics) where the developer provied the basic tools (some being text-based, others wireframe graphics) and the imagination filled in the blanks. I have very vivid memories of the first "Flight Simulator" and "Elite", and in my mind there were wonderful nightscapes, colourful airports, vivid dockings at space stations for trading - none of which existed in B&W silent wireframe. A game would often inspire a gamer to read a book on the topic, or turn to a game because of a book or movie.
It's all changed.

I agree about difficulty, Bone, but I must disagree about a compelling story. I view games as interactive stories, in which the player takes an active part, a natural extension of motion pictures. I guess I have been modeled by Extra Credits :D
