No weapon and armor degradation in Skyrim

Bethesda VP Pete Hines revealed in twitter than weapons and armor would not suffer degradation in The Elder Scrolls V: SKyrim.

When asked by a fan, "Hey Pete, I'm just wondering, do weapons and armor degrade in Skyrim, like with their own health? Also, is there visual damage?", Hines replied, "No and no."

He then added, "We replaced that w/ creating/improve weap/armor, instead of spending lots of time getting them back to where they were."

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11, 2011.

Meh, I don't really care about that. The repairs were more of a nuisance than anything else. I do a better way to go is making them more durable, with difficult and expensive repairs, but none is better that the half-arsed approach

Well, it seems you'll have armor that's meh, and you'll have to work on it to make it good.

Not realistic but will make for better gameplay. That's been a problem with other games as well ("STALKER, "Far Cry 2") - while more true-to-life, it's a gaming pain in the backpack.

System Shock 2, it was an incredible pain the ass.

It's indeed good psychologically as well not to have durability loss, as it seems that you're paying to get back what you once had, while the system they appear to be proposing is one where you improve a piece over time. And didn't durability originate in MMO's as a money sink, to normalize the game economy?

Sadly, it seems Bethesda are slowly making Skyrim another Fable game...

Dang... All I can say is Dang

@Aikon :| Why do you say that? Lack of durability loss in items is simply a design choice for many great RPG's, for instance DA:O, The Witcher, The Witcher 2.

Neverwinter nights, Baldurs Gate, KOTOR,...

The list is pretty huge.

True, I can actually think of more RPG's that don't have it that do. Only Fallout and Scrolls games had it in recent years, now that I think of it. Both Bethesda titles.

Not big of a problem to me. No need to run across the map to get stuff fixed all the time. Everything you collect will be at a "normal" working price... Hm, we'll see how that goes...

@unsilviu: Well it's not just that, look back through older Skyrim news. They're even using a Fable-like relationship system as said here: http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/13291/bethesda-skyrim-features-cut-for-same-reasons-as-oblivion

I'm not a fan of having to fix my equipment all the time so i kinda like this decision.

I agree with that. You're a dragon slayer warrior, not a blacksmith.. :D
By JonahFalcon (SI Elite) on Aug 29, 2011

Well, actually, you don't fix it, but you can upgrade it as a blacksmith.

What about a blacksmith who becomes a warrior (ie. "Kingdom of Heaven" and countless like it)?

This is one bit I can live without and no thoughts will be made to longfully remember the days I had to go out and score some hammers in a murky swamp - hammering my magical swords etc... Best cut so far.

^ fool wolf has a point - i hated crawling through random caves looking for those damn repair hammers/ but i kinda like idea of weapon degrade - maby just make it that i dont have to repair the damn things soo often XP

It was kinda annoying TBH.

Are they fixing the god-awful weapon enchantment system? Nothing says "fuck this" like only having a dozen or two hits before you need to recharge with seriously rare gems.

LOL @ SirRoderick
That would be part 2 in features you should remove! ;)

I also love an infinite inventory in Gothic series, i would not mind if it made an appearance here. They can call it the sissy mode for all i care :).
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Sep 01, 2011

No @ infinite inventory.

Let's be somewhat realistic about this!
By nocutius (SI Elite) on Sep 01, 2011

It depends on the game, I cant imagine Gothic without an infinite inventory. There would be way to much microing if you had to pay attention to all the various ingredients for smelting and alchemy.
But i totally understand why it doesn't belong in an elder scrolls game. They are quite different games.

Yeah, no infinite inventory +1. Some realism must prevail IMO.
