It took 18 years, but the most famous first person shooter of all time, DOOM (and its sequel DOOM II) is no longer banned in Germany.
No longer "harmful to youung people".
Bethesda, the current holder of the DOOM IP rights, was understandably pleased. According to senior VP Pete Hines, "We are obviously very pleased with their decision. Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."
Both titles were previously indexed by the Federal Department as Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM), which placed the games in the same commercially restrictive category as porn. Gears of War 3 was recently relegated to the same category.
The most logical result of the unbanning will probably be the release of DOOM on Xbox Live Arcade, now that the pixellated graphics no longer constitute porn.
