Perfect World CEO Kelvin Lau reveals MMO Star Trek Online is going to be free-to-play by the end of 2011, according to a response given in an earnings call.

He said Perfect World could "share" their F2P experience with Cryptic now they've acquired them, and they were in fact already working on a free-to-play model.

"...also Star Trek Online, after the acquisition, in fact Cryptic is working on the free-to-play model for Star Trek Online," said CEO Kelvin Lau.

"This is going to be launched by the end of this year as well. So I think free-to-play model we have a bigger potential in US market and also in China market." Perfect World are using Cryptic Studios to expand operations in Europe and North America.

Will you give Star Trek Online a shot when it's free-to-play, videogamer? Cryptic's other MMO, Champions Online, has already adopted a free-to-play model.

This actually took longer than i expected :).

Sure i'll go back to check it out when it actually goes f2p. Who knows maybe they even improved the game enough to warrant giving them some cash again. It's good enough for a f2p as it is but i just don't see myself paying a sub.

I'm sooo incredibly lucky to have followed my head regarding purchasing a lifetime subscription. I was really pumped about this game and almost wasted 200€ on it, close call.

To make it short, yes, i'll go check things out when STO goes f2p.

Heh, it's been a year and a half since release lol :).
You should give it a try. Or you could just wait for it to go f2p and activate it then. Hopefully you might even get some sort of a bonus then, at least some Cryptic points would be nice.

To be honest i waited more than six months to activate my copy as well. The pre-launch convinced me not to get a life sub, cause the game was pretty weak at launch, so i waited half a year and it still wasnt to my liking then so i never renewed.
