Dead Space 2 the scariest 360 game, according to scientific study

Vertical Slice used scientific methods to determine which Xbox 360 game was the scariest, and to determine what constitutes scariness in a game. They used both interviews and empirical data, and also objective scientific methods, including biometrics, including heart rate, skin surface temperature, and GSR (Galvanic Skin Response).

They found that Dead Space 2 evoked the strongest fear response and discovered some interesting aspects of horror games. The other games they used were Alan Wake, Resident Evil 5 and Condemned.

For one, actual combat is not as scary as the implied threat of combat, and cutscenes are generally not sources of fear for most players. Casual gamers are affected most by them, while core gamers are the least scared. This could be because core games know there's less danger in a cutscene. The more cinematic a sequence, the less fear a core gamer feels, while a casual gamer experiences it like a movie and feels scared.

The first confrontation is almost always the scariest. In every game, across all player experience levels, the first encounters with the enemies are much scarier than later ones. Obviously, being forced to do the same thing over and over removes the threat and mystery.

Gore isn't a source of real fear, just provocative in its implications. However, the grotesque will evoke more fear and gore will increase the impact of a shocking event.

In general, casual players are more easily scared than core players, but also enjoy the games more. Experienced gamers' familiarity with the medium and their existing expectations of it, means they are less likely to become scared than casual gamers.

I agree - it was scary on PC as well - scary as hell to control. haven't felt that inaccurate since I was a around 20+ and went bar-hopping...

Lol, I agree with this one. I love Horror games, but lately very few of them scare me. Dead Space at first was scary, but eventually I got used to the whole jump out of the vents act, and I wasn't even scared one bit.

Haven't gotten around to playing Dead Space 2 yet. So can't really say if its scary or not.
As for the other games they tested, Condemned I can understand. But Alan Wake and RE5? Seriously?!
How about the either the Fatal Frame series or Silent Hill series? I bet they would get some heart rates going with those games!

I agree Revan, Alan Wake has no room in this lineup.

Also the results of this study are kinda self evident to any gamer. I wont get scared no matter the cutscene cause i know i'm safe. Regular movies still freak me out though :).

I never got the chance to play Fatal Frame, as I heard that it is quite a scarer. Silent Hill on the other hand was quite freaky. Though I must admit that Silent Hill: Homecoming wasn't that scary.

Can't say about Alan Wake, and Condemned. But I know that R5 was not scary at all... Dead Space a little in the beginning, but just as the article says the more the player experiences it the threat/fear goes away. This was not a proper scientific study by the way...

Condemned had one of the most frightening endings ever. Alone, in a house with a psychpath...

Oh yes, I remember that part, and it was quite freaky. Another part in the game that was quite scary, is the sewer part, where you face those strange crawling addict things. I hate sewers!

Only game I've played that truly ever gave me the chills (and I've played many listed above) was "FEAR" (the original). Some of the later levels, particularly in the attic were way too freaky for 3am.
"Dead Space", and I can only speak for the original captured the very same bone chilling atmosphere, and aside from the dreadful console controls and gameplay which took away from immersion, I can see why the second game would pants-changingly scary.

F.E.A.R. back in the day was incredibly scary! I also had a few moments, but the games that really-really got to me was DOOM 3 (back then I had a GeForce MX 440), after that, it took a while before something really got to me again, but next in line was F.E.A.R. and then many years later Amnesia: Dark Descent.

Amnesia is the game that gave me the biggest fright I have ever had, but I still love that game XD

Not may good scary games - DOOM3 was scary until you expected things to jump at you all the time - and voila - not scary anymore. Most horror games seem to pick up one thing and then overdo it. Condemned seems to be a bit different since it is actually a game that differs.

I agree. DOOM now a days is more shooting everything than getting a fright. Condemnded gave me quite a few frights as well, like the janitor in the locker room.
