Tindalos Games has announced that their outer space variation on Defense of the Ancients, Stellar Impact, has gone free-to-play as of today.

The official press release is terse and frank about the conversion to a free-to-play model: their subscription model simply wasn't attracting enough players to maintain a stable, usable player base, and the resident population urged the developer to make the change.

The candid presser states, "Since the release, Stellar Impact had difficulty to gather enough players. To resolve this problem the economic model becomes a free to play. Everybody will be able to play for free and infinitly but will be limited to the MK1, you will have to buy a premium account to unlock the others MK."

Tindalos also announced that the first additional spaceship will be revealed and released soon.

No wonder nobody wanted to pay subscription for this. This game is total crap. I played it for five minutes before uninstalling it.
