Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded delayed indefinitely

While Duke Nukem Forever was released to jeers and critical savaging, the previous 1996 title, Duke Nukem 3D, has a special place in the hearts of gamers who are of a certain age. An indie developer made of Duke fans have been working on an updated version of the classic game with modern graphics and tech called Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded.

Sounds like a dream game, but unfortunately, the team has been hit with a creative conflict by the current license holders, Gearbox Software, whom they had previously consulted with on restrictions.

According to a post on the official website: "After careful consideration of the progress and direction of the project, Interceptor Entertainment has decided to finish Duke Nukem: Reloaded at a future date that is yet to be determined... Interceptor Entertainment still has the good will and non commercial license provided to us to use the Duke Nukem brand for our creative ambitions. We hope to resume that work again when the time is right."

The reasoning is apparently due to a difference of opinion with Gearbox, as the statement reads: "We are around 90% finished with the current Multiplayer version - But you have to remember, that we don't own the game. Its done under a signed license with Gearbox Software. Which ultimately means, that we cannot do whatever we want with the project.

Its not really up to us. We have had a long conversation with Gearbox about this matter. And the fact is, that we are bound by a license. A license of an IP owned by Gearbox Software. And we can't do much about it.."

Some are speculating that the issue might be that Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded outclasses Duke Nukem Forever, which would be an embarrassment to Gearbox and publisher Take 2, but the real reason is unknown.

Regardless, hopefully the reboot is released, just to see what the original Duke shooter might be like with today's technology. The official Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded site can be visited here.

This should be interesting.

I enjoyed Forever, but it wasn't what I expected. 3D Reloaded should be better, since 3D is the classic Duke Nukem.

The main problem of Duke Nukem Forever is that it is basically just Duke Nukem 3D with better graphics, aka heavily outdated gameplay.

Anyway, it's not very nice to give someone permission and then when they are almost done tell them to GTFO. I know they were given the go ahead before Gearbox took over, but it still isn't a very nice move.

Big surprise there.

Too bad that they couldn't have signed a better deal - this would in most ways have been a preferred game than the Duke Nukem Forever...

"DNF" is now available here in Oz for $15 at a local retailer...wouldn't even pay that. As for this, and the original "DN 3D" - I wasn't impressed when they were first released, and I doubt I'd feel differently now. Crass, silly and mindless was how I felt back then.

What type of games do you prefer herodotus?

Hah. Does sound like I'm trashing left-right-centre. I enjoy every genre, believe it or not but we all have likes and dislikes. I was playing "Half-Life" (Demo) and "Doom II" when I ha a go at "Duke Nukem 3D". Thought the poor attempt at humour was anything but. You really needed to be partying in the '80's to get all the references, and believe me they sucked. Arnie (who Duke is based on) was turning out some pretty awful films (and I count the first "Terminator" in that pile), as was Stallone ("Rambo II" - fell asleep). Then again, humour in a FPS I just flat out hated. So glad when "MoH" came out on Playstation.
Ahem.

I agree that MoH was fantastic :)

Too bad they screwed the series into the ground pretty quickly huh?

Yes well I bought the 2010 "MoH" and actually enjoyed (still play the MP when there aren't cheaters on the server - which there are plenty of). To understand "Battlefield 3" you really need to have played both "BF:BC 2" and "MoH", as it is the next progression from those titles mixed in with traditional "BF" themes.
As for the first "moH" on PC ("Allied Assault") it literally blew us all away, with the "SPR" sequence (the movie was still very recent, at the time). The aed gameplay in the EP's was varied and quite challenging, even on Easy.

Medal of Honor is a fun game, but I preferred Call of Duty over it. I haven't played the 2010 MoH, but I will get there one day.

Could anything be? Oh that's right - "Soldier of Fortune Payback" (shhhhhiverrrrrr).

This is a very nice site Direct2Drive.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback was a fun game, but I despised the fact the John Mullins had to be removed, and some other random dude be put in.

Soldier of Fortune's were classic when they came out.
