Report: Windows 8 will use less memory than Windows 7
Posted: 09.10.2011 15:34 by JonahFalcon Comments: 27
According to Microsoft's blog, Windows 8 will use far less system resources than its predecessor, but still having the same system usage.

The economy of Win8 starts with the new memory manager which searches for duplicated items in memory, and then unloads all but a single copy to save space. Another feature will allow a developer to designate certain parts of programs and processes as "low priority," which will further prioritize memory usage.

Another way Win8 will lessen memory strain is by changing how and when major programs and services run. Some traditional Windows services will run only when triggered so the OS can save RAM without actually shedding features.

The streamlining of Windows 8's memory manager is intended to help ARM-based tablets which don't have the power of desktops, but gamers are sure to benefit from less system lag as well as safer spawn outs.

On the PC the amount of RAM has not been an issue for years now. If you have a recent machine that is capable of running Win 8 you're also pretty much guaranteed to have more ram than you need.
But then again i'm also old school so keep fingers off of my RAM :)

I tried out the win8 developer. It's basically windows 7 with a slightly (more annoying in my opinion) UI. I just hope they make it better...

I can't say that this brings me any closer to upgrading(?) to Win8 from Win7. I'd like to see this implemented in Win7, though I know that won't happen. Technophiles do this themselves manually anyway.

Have seen win8 and must say I do not like the design to make it look like a iphone or something like that...I will keep my win7.

I think that win8 will become a huge hit on tablets and ultra-thins. For gamers, it has a lot to prove, espcially considerting how PC gaming now is part of the Xbox market...

@FoolWolf: It's been designed with the tablet in mind, hence the exceedingly stupid UI we're being given. Granted, M$ have said that a more traditional desktop option will be available, but by all indications, this will be severly limited in capabilities and features.

Personally, I'm sticking with Vista; never saw the need to upgrade to Win7, sure as hell ain't gonna upgrade to this unless it actually has something of value to offer me.

@Jasca-Ducato, stop being ignorant and join the Win7 crowd! ;)
Seriously though - Win7 is much better than Vista!

Its so much much better. Aren't you tired of those stupid little bugs Vista has?

Win8 is the equivalent of Vista, or XP1.5. Be interested to see what Win9 has in store for us a few years (and no, I don't want Kinect-ability).

I've never had any issues with Vista, and I dislike the desktop layout on Win7. I don't see why I should have to highlight and option in the start bar, then highlight a sub-option just to get to where I want to go.

Win Vista is shit... I honestly don't know what you see in it. I really don't get your problem either, maybe be more specific about it. Did you know you can create a folder and put short cuts into that folder then right click on the taskbar and add it under the toolbars. This allows you to access files very fast.

I dunno, I've have some pretty crappy luck with Win 7 so far. But I've also never had the 64-bit version either.
All I know is that the difference between the 32-bit versions of Vista and Win 7 are pretty big. As in Retard/Genius big. Vista being the Genius.
But then Vista sucked pretty bad too before those 5 million or so updates came out for it.
I'm really hoping M$ will fix all the bugs that both of them had.
By the way, is there a release date for Win 8 yet?

Well, the more exciting thing is that when the Xbox 720 comes out, Win8 users will be able to play their Xbox 360 games on PC (provided they have a Gold membership).

One more reason not to get it, then:)

@Jonah

Well what's the bloody point of owning an Xbox then? I'm assuming that the reason you're playing it on the PC in the first place is becaus you think it is a superiour platform to be playing on!

All that is is a way of getting subscription fees from PC gamers that are tmepted to try a certain Xbox game, but who wouldn't buy a console.

@Jonah - that is still not confirmed - and Redmond has said that it won't be like that at all from launch and not sure if it ever will be possible. I guess it will be more akin to the android app Sony PSN has - you can chat, shop and talk but not actually play...
Edit note: on the same topic I found this: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/321458/microsoft-preparing-onlive-rival-for-2012-report/ It seems that Xbox Live titles will be one purchase - enjpoy on any platform - which would be cool if mouse and keyboard is ok and Xbox 360 games could multiplay with the same PC game... I guess my response above was a bit premature and and as all other articles - not officially supported yet. Back to the old "wait and see..."
