GSC responds to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 DRM outcry

When it was revealed yesterday that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 might have the dreaded DRM which requires the user to have a constant broadband connection, the reaction was predictably one of outrage.

GSC has responded to the outrage in a statement, blaming the high rate of piracy in Russia for their consideration of the controversial DRM for the shooter.

“The idea of implementing DRM came in as a possible anti-piracy solution. You know the severe level of commercial piracy we have here in ex-USSR region. This said however, there is no firm decision to go for DRM with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 as of now. Be assured, we do realize how uncomfortable this solution is for the players, so we’ll continue looking for most effective, yet acceptable for all, way of protecting the game by the time of its release.” read a statement from a spokesperson.

It seems that GSC referring to the DRM as a possible anti-piracy solution for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may mean that they won't use it after all.

I'm not sure but I think most if not all DRM has been cracked. I suppose it'll slow it down, and discourage some people from pirating it. Not much though. I just get annoyed when games halt because of a internet hiccup.

Steam is the DRM that I prefer most. A one-time online activation which allows me to play offline is just fine and dandy for me.

I agree with you Jonah, if there has to be any DRM then STEAM is the best choice.

I agree. I only recently got into Steam, and I must admit that I love it. I am looking forward to this new S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The best I've seen so far has been in "Rise of Flight" (developed and until a year ago published in Russia). Online activation, and then only connect to play SP if you want your stats recorded. Play offline otherwise.
GSC has got it wrong, and being the intelligent folk that they are, most likely know that this is not an anti-piracy measure as it does not work (we all know that). The truth may someday be revealed.

I just hope that this game will be a success as I am a great fan of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

But I do agree, this method is not going to work out too well.

I had a hard enough time mainating constant and lag-free internet connection while playing MP (nothing like a good time warping to see you dead without a clue how it happened).
