Only 180K units of Resistance 3 sold in September

Insomniac Games' AAA first person shooter for the PlayStation 3, Resistance 3, had a disastrous debut month of September, selling a paltry 180K units in the US, according to the NPD.

Making the low sales doubly painful is that the game had the spotlight all to itself in the shooter genre. The game's 6th September release was two weeks after Deus Ex: Human Revolution and two weeks before Gears of War 3 - both of which charted ahead of the PS3 shooter. Even though Resistance 2 debuted at #9 when it was released in 2008, it still sold twice as many copies in its first month of release than Resistance 3, which was 7th on the list in September.

One of the reasons that have been attributed to the low sales is Sony's lack of marketing, having thrown its support behind Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. It will be interesting to see what sort of sales Uncharted 3 enjoys - the game is due to be released 1st November.

Well, it's kind of hard to expect that these games would sell in such a great number as it was before. Today you have AAA releases like every 15 days or so, and gamers can't spend that much money on games every few weeks. Personally, I don't own a PS3, but it's the same with PC gaming. Hyperproduction is just killing the industry.

Except as the story notes, there was a big cushion for Resistance 3. There wasn't any competition for the game.

Hmmm, it seems the market finally built up a *resistance* to the series... See what I did there? OK, leave me alone, it's late here.

That said, I couldn't comment on this, seeing as I utilise a proper games console (360, btw).

The only proper games 'console' is the PC :).

I only played the first one at a friends place cause the game had coop.

They probably killed the series with the second game lacking coop. I'm sure there were a lot of pissed people that bought Resistance 2 thinking it will have all the main features of the first game only to be totally disappointed (my friend included). All those people have certainly not bought the 3rd game simply on impulse again.

yep, thats exactly how i felt when i round to starting Resistance 2.

And I kinda agree that there are excessive amounts of games to buy nowadays and so many hours to play them all. Still have loads of games lying around and not got round to playing yet

I have to say that I missed the coop as well. The first thing I was planning on doing. There ARE some multiplayer coop missions, but those just weren't the same.
