Rumour: Bethesda "indefinitely postpone" Doom 4 after Rage

Industry whispers speak of Bethesda being thoroughly troubled by id Software's Rage and it's 'okay, but not great' reception among critics. Doom 4 on hold?

A source close to the publisher claims a "company wide" meeting held in Dallas resulted in Bethesda slamming the brakes. There's a "serious lack of confidence".

The alleged decision by Bethesda and ZeniMax stemmed from "the issues and reviews" of the recently released Rage, which has shown a "serious lack of confidence in the project management at id". The PC version has been heavily hit with technical woes.

The Rage development team was meant to switch to Doom 4 after the game was finished but that may now not be the case. Updates for Rage are still in the works as id develop a more extensive graphical options menu for the PC community.

The game's own system for determining how flashy the visuals are has failed, terribly, leaving most with blurred textures and horrendous 'texture pop-in'. For a while the PC community themselves worked to fix the problems, and to their immense credit; they did.

If true, is Bethesda right to force id Software to take a breather?

Yes, until they fix Rage they deserve all the spanking they get, after that give us Doom 4 please.

And a little 'serves you right' to Id, next time make a proper PC game.

They do need to get back to the basics. Fix the PC release, find out why exactly it all went wrong and undertake esome intensive market research as to why "Rage" failed to achieve what was obviously targetted at being a ground-breaking game.

Id needs to fix Rage, but you don't tell id not to work on Doom 4, thats like saying Thomas Jefferson's not allowed to be buried in the US or something.

A failed attempt at innovation, like Brink. But this time, a classic has to pay for it.

This is terrible news. I am really looking forward to DOOM IV, and now I have to wait even longer, because they were in too much of a hurry.

Come on id, you are better than this!
