Rumor: Grand Theft Auto V to be download only?

Research firm Newzoo is convinced that Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar's upcoming open world game, will be download only, rather than a retail game, and that "the boxed GTA V version will contain a collectible piece of merchandise and a download code. No disc."

The firm went on to say, "There are a lot of reasons why publishers are pushing towards digital distribution of triple A games. Speaking out loud might harm the relationship with retail partners, but the benefits have become too large to remain silent about the desire to go completely digital. The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create continuous revenues on a title and simply to make more money."

"Will retail disappear from the picture? Of course not," added Newzoo, "Retail will always remain an important channel to promote and distribute games. Retail has a strong hand to play when it comes to eyeballs and… boxes make a nice gift. Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will."

The past few years have had experts claiming that discs will go the way of the dodo. Do you agree? Let us know.

I just hope the price gouging doesn't continue for Australians with this costing $90. Might not, however as there will be no retail equivalent and therefore EB Games and Gamestop have no reason to benefit from such a move/deal.
