Ubisoft has announced in a press release that the publisher has acquired RedLynx, the developer best known for the smash hit Xbox Live Arcade game, Trials HD. The Finnish developer is also working on Trials Evolution, which will bring multiplayer racing to the game.
"The team at RedLynx has developed exceptionally strong digital brands that stand out for their high replay value, their long tail sales and their multiplatform positioning," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot proclaimed. "We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family. Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms."
Trials HD enjoys the status of being the most popular game ever on Xbox Live Arcade, with its main appeal being a "next-gen" version of the classic NES racer Excitebike. This past May, the title 2M sales.
Analysis: It will be interesting to see what this bodes for Trials Evolution. Much of the game's success has come from Xbox Live Arcade exclusivity, but Ubisoft may instruct RedLynx to make the game multiplatform for PlayStation Network and Steam. The publisher may decide to allow Evolution to remain a limited time exclusive, so that the game can be finished on time, then have ports of the game at a later date. Stay tuned.
