The NPD figures are in for US videogame sales, and according to Gamasutra, the industry failed to meet analyst expectations. Videogame software sales were up 3% from last year's October sales, far less than Wedbush Securities prediction of 14% and Sterne Agee's of 10-15%.

According to the NPD, the top 10 best-selling retail games in the United States for October, 2011 were as follows:

1. Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)
2. Batman: Arkham City (360, PS3)
3. NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, PSP, Wii, PS2, PC)
4. Rage (360, PS3, PC)
5. Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360)
6. Dark Souls (PS3, 360)
7. Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP)
8. Forza Motorsport 4 (360)
9. Gears of War 3 (360)
10. FIFA Soccer 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, 3DS)

Seven of the top ten games were new releases, including top selling Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City, NBA 2K12, Rage, Just Dance 3, Dark Souls and Forza Motorsport 4.

As far as console sales, the Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in October, selling 393,000 units, which represents a 21% increase over October 2010 sales. Sony did not reveal any sales figures.

Well "MW3" and "Skyrim" will alter that list quickly enough, and when the PC release of "B:AC" gets closer that will bump the Bat a bit. I'm not surprised "Dark Souls" is at #6, then again I wonder just how many would still be playing as it really is a niche game, even in the once exclusively niche genre of RPG.
