Ghost Recon: Future Soldier dropped for PC due to piracy

UbiSoft had revealed yesterday that I Am Alive had been dropped as a PC game due to piracy. It seems that there will be no Ghost Recon: Future Soldier for the same reason, and the reason PC owners will have to settle for the free-to-play Ghost Recon Online.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Ghost Recon Online producer Sébastien Arnoult related, "We are giving away most of the content for free because there’s no barrier to entry. To the users that are traditionally playing the game by getting it through Pirate Bay, we said, ‘Okay, go ahead guys. This is what you’re asking for. We’ve listened to you – we’re giving you this experience. It’s easy to download, there’s no DRM that will pollute your experience.’"

He added, "We’re adapting the offer to the PC market. I don’t like to compare PC and Xbox boxed products because they have a model on that platform that is clearly meant to be €60’s worth of super-Hollywood content. On PC, we’re adapting our model to the demand."

Ghost Recon Online was the best way to get Ghost Recon fans their game on the PC platform without having to deal with piracy or intrusive DRM. According to Arnoult, "When we started Ghost Recon Online we were thinking about Ghost Recon: Future Solider; having something ported in the classical way without any deep development, because we know that 95% of our consumers will pirate the game. So we said okay, we have to change our mind.

We have to adapt, we have to embrace this instead of pushing it away. That’s the main reflection behind Ghost Recon Online and the choice we’ve made to go in this direction."

Let us know if you're interested in Ghost Recon Online, which looks startlingly good for a browser-based game.

Well done Ubisoft, anyone who wishes to compete in the genre Ghost Recon once was, has free reign over its largest platform.

While others can make money despite piracy - I wonder what's the problem over at Ubisoft. Perhaps if they stopped their bitching about PC players then might actually do something worthwhile?
Nah, just kidding - I'm glad I saw this problem coming a long time ago - Ubisoft has been dead in the water for me as a publisher since long.

To know that until this releases all previous statements have quite blatantly been pushing the PC version as a heavily supported product. All lies, or uninformed PR consultants.
"GR Online" - now I am very, very not interested while before I simply had misgivings. Haven't been a fan of Ubi for a few years now, since the "IL2:CoD" and "SH5" debacles and remain convinced they are a lost cause for PC.

Fuck Ubisoft.

The only reason they're selling so poorly on PC is because of bad bloody decision making.

If a publisher like Paradox Interactive gets profits on PC exclusively, even so much that they give away their games for free on a regular basis, how come one Ubisoft complains that they can't afford their game being published on PC platform due to piracy? Pirates are a problem of course, but if they lowered their games' price a little bit and made some GOOD game for a change, people would buy their products as well.

This way, they're "punishing" the whole gaming community because of one group that supports piracy. It's like when the whole school class gets punished because of a few bullies who make troubles. It's a pointless approach.

Paradox has no DRM, supports their community unflinchingly with patches, expansions and mod support, provide things like frequent dev diaries and anwser questions straightforwardly and honestly.

Ubisoft does the exact opposite of that. Gee, I wonder why their PC sales are so low?

UbiSoft is making gobs and gobs of money. They've employed thousands of people in Montreal alone. Don't criticize their business model, because it's working.

Yes well the "AC" franchise has done them proud. Without it I don't believe they'd be riding so high.
